What can fans anticipate at the DC Heroes and Villains Fest? Activities include watching the parade, eating DC-inspired food, interacting with your favorite DC characters, and watching fun shows with dancing and DC heroes and villains duking it out. In addition, guests can go on rides, including the many DC rides such as Wonder Woman: Flight of Courage, Batman: The Ride, Lex Luthor and more.

“We started this event last year, and the whole thing was that we’ve got this great partnership with Warner Bros. to bring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and all these people to life,” said Mike Ostrom, the head of entertainment and events at Six Flags Magic Mountain. “And we wanted to do that in a way that guests could really become part of a story with them, to really interact with them.”

“So that’s how we started this last year, and then this year we wanted to just blow that out of proportion,” he continued. “All night long from 5 pm to closing, there’s something for you to do, someone for you to interact with, a superhero to meet, a villain to join, or something like that all throughout the evening. It’s all driven by creating an immersive guest experience where they get to be part of the DC Universe.”

Shows

On the left side near the entrance of the DC Universe-themed area, there is a sign with the times of the shows. You can also check the Six Flags Magic Mountain app for the times. It can be tricky to navigate the app, but make sure you stay on the app and not click on links that lead you to the website, since the actual app has the showtime at the time of this writing.

The event kicks off with the parade as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman wave to fans on a float with dancers nearby moving to the DC Heroes and Villains Fest theme. The parade ends at the DC Universe theme area on the DC Universe stage for the DC Heroes Bash Cavalcade and the Opening Ceremony. I recommend fans to check out the opening show on the stage as we get to see Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman dealing with the Joker and a mystery villain.

Throughout the evening, there are different villainess shows featuring Catwoman and Harley Quinn. Catwoman’s Purrr-petrators-A-Go-Go showcases her dancers with a retro musical performance. Harley Quinn & The Hyenas dance to popular songs.

Keeping the festivities going is the Joker’s Dance Party with MC Hi-Jinx on the ones and twos. To get the guests engaged, Poison Ivy’s and Joker’s dancers roam around the area. If guests pay attention to the stage, the Clown Prince of Crime would sometimes make an appearance.

The other highly recommended show is the closing act, Superhero Smackdown. Here, fans will get to see the conclusion of the event with the return of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman as they deal with the Joker, Harley Quinn and their minions.

The Magic of Performances and Voices

Part of the magic in bringing the characters to life was the blend of the performers who look the part and the voice actors who capture the sounds of the heroes and villains. Six Flags Magic Mountain teamed up with WOW Entertainment to help bring these elements together.

“We actually worked with the voiceover people who have done some of the video games and some of the cartoons and had them be the voices of it,” said Mark Brymer, the CEO of WOW Entertainment. “So that was a real exciting event.”

Meet the Heroes and Villains

Fans will get a chance to meet and interact with their heroes. The Joker and Harley Quinn can be seen near the DC Universe entrance, complete with a throne. Batman and Batgirl pose for fans near the Batman: The Ride. Wonder Woman and Superman await fans between the entrances of Batman: The Ride and Wonder Woman: Fight of Courage. Catwoman is also present with her whip across the stage.

Food and Drinks

The heroes have their own food booth with the menu including Knight Wingz (smoked wing over cilantro cabbage slaw), Kansas Farm Roasted Street Corn (spicy fire roasted corn riblets with lime aioli and cotija cheese), the Lighthouse Roll (shrimp salad on a buttery potato roll), and Hero in Training (Strawberry lemondade with pineapple and coconut).

Over on the villains’ booth, there is the Kapow! Pork (Char siu pork with white rice and toasted sesame seeds), Ha! Ha! Ha! Chicken with Clown Sauce (grilled chicken skewer with a tangy cucumber sauce and purple cabbage slaw), Fearless Meatless Meatballs (served with white rice and tzatziki sauce), and Villains in Training (dessert pear soda with cranberry).

The dessert booth has Zingbiffpow marshmallow treats, villain’s special spicy popcorn mix, the diabolically candied apple, and Save the Planet Dippin’ Dots.

Six Flags Magic Mountain’s DC Heroes and Villains Fest runs on Fridays and Saturdays until July 26, 2025. Expect next year’s show to be even bigger!

It starts off with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) asking as Clark Kent (David Corenswet) if he is okay with her interviewing him as Superman. The reporter grills him on the questions, and he’s upset at her because he just wants to save people and do good. It later cuts to all the mayhem and action, including a part where Lex Luthor and the Engineer infiltrate Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.

The trailer does a good job of capturing what Superman represents, and Corenswet isn’t taking the job lightly.

“I thought, ‘Well, how could it possibly get better than this?’” Corenswet tells Nerd Reactor about getting the part of Superman. “And then James brought together such a great crew of people and a cast of actors that I had the same experience of like how can it be this good and also on how it’s such an amazing film – something that’s going to be seen by so many people and it means so much to so many people.”

During the Superman Teaser Trailer Preview on Monday at Warner Bros. Studios, I had the chance to chat with David Corenswet, who is tasked with portraying the Man of Steel.

“It’s certainly ****ing crazy,” David Corenswet told me about his journey from Netflix’s Hollywood to DC Studios’ Superman. “I mean unexpected. Hard to believe still. Hollywood was such a great experience, like such a great crew and cast and everything.”

The actor knows how much the DC hero means to a lot of people, and he’s not taking his role lightly.

“I thought, ‘Well, how could it possibly get better than this?'” Corenswet continued. “And then James brought together such a great crew of people and a cast of actors that I had the same experience of like how can it be this good and also on how it’s such an amazing film – something that’s going to be seen by so many people and it means so much to so many people.”

Corenswet comes from a long line of actors who have portrayed the DC icon including George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill and more.

“We’re super proud of this,” Lee tells Nerd Reactor during the unveiling. “[The] art was designed by Jamal Campbell, McFarlane Toys did the digital sculpt of this, and I think it’s the most powerful one so far. And it’s just so amazing that we’re able to add more and more of the DC pantheon to the beautiful city of Burbank. Our heroes are protecting the city, but it’s also the home of DC Comics.”

Stewart is an important member of DC’s Green Lantern Corps, and the statue can be seen at Hangar 28 in Burbank, CA, right behind the BevMo! building. This marks the third DC superhero statue in Burbank after Batman in downtown Burbank and Wonder Woman at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour entrance.

“John Stewart represents an important milestone in DC history as our first modern Black costumed superhero, debuting in Green Lantern #87, published in October of 1971,” said Lee during the ceremony. “For writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams to create a character like John Stewart was nothing short of visionary, as it broke a lot of the usual conventions when it came to superheroes, including his being one of the few to not wear a mask in his role as a Green Lantern to hide who he is. He’s John Stewart, period.”

An exclusive comic, Green Lantern John Stewart, Global Guardian, was commissioned by Visit Burbank, and it will be available while supplies last. It is written by John Ridley and Charlotte Fullerton McDuffie with art by Amancay Nahuelpan, CHRISCROSS, and Jordi Tarragona and cover art by Jamal Campbell.

“His adventures in comic books and animation with Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and Green Lantern: Beware My Power have become an enduring part of DC’s storytelling legacy,” Lee continued. “And with the character’s upcoming live-action debut on DC Studios’ Lanterns TV series, John Stewart’s future couldn’t be brighter.”

Some fans may not remember, but at one time, Pierre was cast in Mahershala Ali’s Blade film. The actor exited the Marvel film as problems continued to delay the troubled production.

Filming for Lanterns is scheduled to begin in January of 2025 and rumors claim a decision on the casting of John Stewart could be made as early as the end of this week.

Deathstroke was previously played by Joe Manganiello in Zack Snyder’s DCEU. Originally, it was planned to have Manganiello as the main villain in Ben Affleck’s solo Batman film. He was also slated to have his own solo film directed by The Raid director Gareth Evans, but all those plans were scrapped once The Snyderverse was canceled.

We don’t have any word yet on whether this will take place within Matt Reeves’ The Batman or if this will be part of DC Studios head honcho James Gunn’s new DC Universe.

There is currently no official title or director attached to the project.

“Finally feel like he’s gotten his due,” Lee tells Nerd Reactor. “How cool is it that a fictional character, been around for 85 years, finally gets a star on the Walk of Fame? It’s a huge honor. I think it’s a testament that he is a Hollywood icon, he’s a global icon, and I think it just solidifies that fact. So we’re really thrilled to celebrate Batman here on this amazing august day.”

“It was the character of Batman and Robin that created the opportunity for our television series,” Ward said. “It reached hundreds of millions of people a week. And now finally, the character joins Adam West (Batman) who had a star, and myself. I got my star in 2020.”

“I think it’s incredible that we broke history here today,” Baker exclaimed. “The fact that he’s the first superhero to get his star. If you’re going to give it to one superhero, absolutely he’s the best. I love that we got several generations of Batmen mentioned.”

The ceremony was held five days after 2024’s Batman Day.

Villain #1: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as The Black Manta

From Candyman to Ambulance; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II takes our number one spot as DC’s villain on the scene. Yahya portrayed The Black Manta in the first Aquaman film, and he’ll be reprising his role as the main villain in the newest sequel, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. Kicking ass and taking names – Black Manta is back for revenge and will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force.

Director James Wan and Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, along with Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman return in the sequel to the highest-grossing DC film of all time. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom will be released in theaters on December 22, 2023.

Villain #2: Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger

Erik Killmonger will go down in history as one of the most notable, badass villains in the Marvel universe. With infamous one-liners such as “Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from the ships, because they knew death was better than bondage” and unformidable powers, he was not one to be reckoned with. Both profound and easy on the eyes, Michael B. Jordan masterfully embodied his inner villain while captivating our attention with his unrelenting drive to take T’Challa’s throne.

Villain #3: Jamie Foxx as Electro

Jamie Foxx’s electric performance as Spider-Man’s evil nemesis, Electro, was one for the books. Known for his multi-award-winning roles whose screen credits range from smooth-talking attorney, Willie E. Gary, in the film, The Burial to Ray Charles in the biopic Ray, Fox’s talent knows no bounds. His antagonist character, Electro, has been an indelible part of the Spider-Verse ever since his first appearance in 1964’s The Amazing Spider-Man #9. His tactical brilliance, electromagnetic charisma and electrifying abilities undoubtedly make him Spider-Man’s deadliest foe.

Villain #4: Jonathan Majors as Kang

Jonathan Majors’ new Kang variant debuted in Loki Season 2 as Victor Timely! From He Who Remains to Kang the Conqueror to Victor Timely, Major returns as the dimension-hopping villain who sees himself as the rightful master of the world and uses the power of time travel to seek to rewrite history to his own whims and ensure his rise to power. Major’s nefarious supervillain will inevitably wreak havoc over the Multiverse!

Loki Season 2 is currently airing on Disney+.

Villain #5: Mahershala Ali as Prowler

We first caught a glimpse of Prowler in cinema in the first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The Prowler gets our number #5 spot for his awesome use of gauntlets and gadgets. A technological genius and skilled hand-to-hand combatant, the Prowler is a ruthless and efficient killer who you don’t want to go toe to toe with.

Mahershala Ali voiced Aaron Davis, aka Prowler, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The actor reprised his voice role at the end of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Fans will expect to see more of Davis in the third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Villain #6: Chukwudi Iwuji as High Evolutionary

Chukwudi Iwuji portrayed the arch-villain, The High Evolutionary, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. He is a mad scientist with a penchant for genetic manipulation and an interest in elevating animals to intelligent self-awareness, and even once de-evolved himself into a pile or primordial ooze on purpose. As a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chukwudi’s stellar performance gave this supervillain a menacing seriousness and a bombastic presence in the film.

The docuseries is narrated by Rosario Dawson and features over 60 new and archival interviews from actors, creators and executives including Greg Berlanti, Tim Burton, Lynda Carter, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, James Gunn, Patty Jenkins, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton, Jim Lee, Christopher Nolan, Robert Pattinson, Christopher Reeve, Margot Robbie, Zack Snyder, Bruce Timm, Michael E. Uslan, Mark Waid, and more.

Even though it’s a documentary by Warner Bros. and DC, they gave the filmmakers permission to really dig deep and show the good and the bad events. For example, the stories of Batman co-creators Bob Kane & Bill Finger and Superman co-creators Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster are touched upon, revealing how poorly the creators were treated.

“I think we both like to find the conflict and bring it out,” Mark Catalena tells Nerd Reactor and others in a roundtable interview. “I mean that’s what a good story does. And so that was a big part of it for us. They gave us more leeway in the early stuff, but I think we did it all the way through… really just be very candid and very kind of just genuine. It was important to come from a very earnest point of view because we’re fans ourselves.”

“To us, it’s always finding what are the most controversial moments and what are the most dramatic lows,” Leslie Iwerks said. “What are the things that they may not want us to tell and why. Let’s talk about that. Warner Bros. and DC have been so great in that way. Even on the Warner Brothers 100, which we’re not talking about, they always just say, ‘Go for it.’ They trust us because we did The Imagineering Story. On The Imagineering Story, Disney had never been open and honest about some of those dramatic moments in the company’s history, and they trusted us to say, ‘Be self-reflective. Be honest. We’re all human. So what are our mistakes and how do we get out of them?’ Let other people learn from those mistakes.”

The documentary even touches on the rivalry between DC and Marvel, but the filmmakers really wanted to focus more on the artists of DC.

“So we really wanted to focus on the artists,” Iwerks said. “We didn’t really want it to feel like the competition with Marvel was going to garner the greatest results because we know a lot of that already. So to us, it was about who are the unsung heroes of DC. Who were the artists that you don’t really know about and what were their challenges?”

With a lot of interviews with different artists, creators, and actors, there are some favorites for the filmmakers.

“For me, it was Lynda Carter,” Iwerks revealed. “I think she was just so honest. Because I grew up on that show, it was like meeting a childhood hero, right? To me, I always love to know about people’s processes and what is it that is exciting for them, what is it that challenges them, scares them. And for Lynda, it was like, ‘I didn’t know what I was doing.’ You’ll see that in episode two. ‘But it was just trying to make this a character about goodness and always doing the right thing, but yet still has sort of a moral center but can be a little teeny edgy, not too much.’ So I enjoyed that, but you know, all the artists were so cool.”

“Take your pick,” Catalena said. “I mean, all of them. I feel like I really enjoyed talking to Gene Yang and to John Ridley. Super bright guys. Gene won a MacArthur grant. Yeah, it was great. They’re very good at explaining complicated subjects in a very simple, clean way. It’s been really successful I think because of that. But yeah, take your pick”

There is a narrative of how Batman co-creator Bob Kane didn’t give credit to Bill Finger, but Superpowered: The DC Story has some revealing archival footage.

“Now that was a big find,” Catalena exclaimed. “And that was a testament to our archive team. We worked really closely with Ben LeClear at DC, the head archivist. And it was just going through unlabeled tapes, all kinds of stuff and we came across this Comic Con in like 76 but in a hotel ballroom in New York, just completely random. And yeah, we’re like, ‘Wait a minute. This goes against the common narrative that he never gave Bill credit.’ So we’re like, ‘This is huge.’ At least for the fans, this is huge.”

“We love to dispel myths,” Iwerks said. “And I think that the footage of him actually giving Bill Credit was really powerful. And, you know, the narration sort of sets it up, if you didn’t already know.”
