The voice cast of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is returning including Micah Abbey as Donatello, Shamon Brown Jr. as Michelangelo, Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, Brady Noon as Raphael and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as April O’Neil. In the series, the Turtles are separated from each other and will have to test their resolve to survive against deadly robots.

“It was a very different recording for Ninja Turtles without all of the Ninja Turtles together, because I’d gotten used to that with the movie,” Cantu tells Nerd Reactor. “Honestly in the booth, I was thinking reading your guys’ lines, like, ‘How would Brady say this? How would [Micah] say this? So having the isolation aspect kind of tie into the story – made me feel better about it, because I was like, ‘Okay, it’s functioning on a story level.'”

Christopher L. Yost (Thor: Ragnarok, The Mandalorian, 2013’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Alan Wan (Blue Eye Samurai, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) serve as the showrunners, and both have worked on many Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles projects.

“There have been many versions of the Turtles before,” Yost said. “We’ve seen many shows, we’ve seen many comics, we’ve seen all these things, but you know, a couple things that the movie did differently that kind of set this apart is really to focus on them as teenagers, more or less just normal kids who happen to be turtles and ninjas and all that. And then secondly, it was like, ‘How can we challenge these kids like never before? How can we do something that we haven’t necessarily seen before?’ And we kind of put all that in a blender and came upon this idea of tearing them apart, putting them in the situation, and seeing what they do without their brothers by their side.”

During CinemaCon 2024, Paramount Pictures announced to the crowd of theater owners that it is working on a live-action, R-rated The Last Ronin movie. This marks the first time we’re getting a live-action film since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in 2016. In addition to it being a live-action film, it will also have an R-rating, making it the first film in the franchise to be made for a mature audience.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was an animated film that was released last year, receiving positive reviews from critics and fans and making $180 million at the worldwide box office from a budget of $70 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin will have Tyler Burton Smith as the co-writer, who also worked on the brutal Boy Kills World film starring Bill Skarsgard.

Attached as the producer is Walter Hamada, the former president of Warner Bros. Pictures for DC-based film production. He is producing with his 18hz production company.

At Paramount Station, guests will embark on the Adventure to the Peak, a hyper-realistic gondola lift that simulates winds and heights. The ride features Paramount characters and recorded commentary by CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz and Tony Romo.

Expedition Vegas will be located outside The Mirage Hotel along the Vegas Strip (3400 South Las Vegas Blvd.). The Fan Experience will be held on the following day/time:

The Lodge Returns

Paramount+ is bringing back The Lodge, the cabin-like activation, and it will be touring across the nation in 2024. Debuting in 2023, attendees at San Diego Comic-Con got the chance to experience an immersive area featuring Yellowjackets, Spongebob Squarepants, Good Burger, Transformers and more.

This year, the Lodge is bringing to life Paramount+ shows and films with exclusive merchandise giveaways, challenges, photo opportunities, custom drinks and more. It will be traveling to mountain cities including Winter Park, CO; Stratton, VT; and Lake Tahoe, CA; and returning to Steamboat Springs, CO; SXSW in Austin, TX; and San Diego Comic-Con.

2024 will showcase titles like Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Halo, Frasier, Survivor, Mean Girls, and Star Trek: Discovery. For animation fans, guests can take photos with Dora, pose in the life-sized Krusty Krab boat from Spongebob Squarepants, and hang out in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mud room.

The Paramount Presents theater is dedicated to the golden era of cinema and will have props and a film reel.

Star Trek: Discovery fans will get to sit in the captain’s chair, play bowling in the Knuckles universe, and earn a Paramount+ marshal badge by playing the timed lasso roping game.

Survivor fans can share their thoughts, strategies and personal experiences, replicating the cast’s experiences on the show and having the chance to make it onto the show’s official social media channels. At the Woodstone Bed & Breakfast, CBS’s Ghosts will have photo and video opportunities with some surprise “visitors.”

Halo fans will get to see the Covenant artifact, a relic belonging to the alien threat from the franchise. As a Spartan, guests will see if they are the chosen one by touching the artifact. Costumes and props from the show are displayed, and there will be exclusive Halo-branded goggle covers.

Frasier fans will be able to go inside Mahoney’s Taproom.

The Paramount+ Pub will be the place for sports fans as they can play the hook and ring toss or a UEFA Champions League-themed soccer ball-kicking challenge. Sports-inspired cocktails are available at the sports-themed bar showcasing jerseys, cleats, balls and team paraphernalia.

The Street Fighter 6 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles partnership begins on August 8, 2023, and will include the 4 Turtle costumes and gear & emotes for their avatars. A.K.I. Reveal

That’s not the only thing that Capcom teased during Evo 2023. The trailer for A.K.I. has been released, showing off the next fighter to be added to the Street Fighter 6 roster. If you thought Juri was sadistic and terrifying, A.K.I. is going to give her a run for her money. An example of the cinematic in-game footage from World Tour was shown as the avatar encounters the new fighter. A.K.I. will be released in Fall 2023.

During the Mutant Mayhem panel at SDCC 2023, TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman announced that Paramount and Nickelodeon had acquired the rights to the beloved 1987 TMNT series. The studio now owns all 193 episodes of the original animated Fred Wolf series from 1987 to 1996.

The TMNT cartoon series will debut digitally later this month in the U.S., followed by Nickelodeon branded channels and digital platforms internationally.

In the series, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, along with their various allies, battle the Shredder, Krang, the Foot, and other villains and criminals in the streets of New York.

Also, during the panel, TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman said the look of Mutant Mayhem reminds him of the underground comics he and Peter Laird created. A visual style that director, Jeff Rowe, leaned heavily into the teenage aspect of the movie. Not only do actual teenagers voice the titular turtles’ roles, but they also make the animation style look like “teenagers drew them.”

Nerd Reactor had the chance to chat with director Jeff Rowe and voice actors Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo), Micah Abbey (Donatello), Brady Noon (Raphael), and Shamon Brown Jr (Michelangelo) about the film’s audition, leaning in on the teenager part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, whether they would want to do The Last Ronin film and more.

A lot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies and shows have focused on the mutant, ninja and turtles part, but not so much on the teenage part. Director Jeff Rowe wanted to really bring out the teenagers in the Turtles, and it wasn’t hard thanks to the voice cast.

“It was easy because we leaned on the kids and leaned on the cast,” Rowe said of capturing the teenage spirit. “We do this extensive casting search, hundreds of people auditioned. And then we just found these four kids that just felt like the turtles and had great chemistry together. And we tried recording them individually, and we had this script where there were adults’ ideas of how teenagers spoke to each other, and it just felt so false coming out of their mouths. We’re like, ‘We got to record them together, and we have to record not just them saying the lines, but the conversations around it.’ And we were able to just capture them authentically.”

Nicolas Cantu originally auditioned for the role of Donatello, but in the end, the filmmakers thought he was the best fit for the leader of the group, Leonardo.

“Yeah, I actually auditioned for Donatello originally,” Cantu tells Nerd Reactor. “That was my first tape that I got. And then I think it was during the chemistry reads that they were like, ‘You should try the role Leonardo.’ So they threw that one my way. And I feel like I connected with it a lot more. And also because Michah makes such a good Donnie. Like the fact that I was still able to be a part of this project in some way, I just feel grateful. And also like he’s the leader!”

Abbey originally auditioned for Donatello but also had the chance to audition as Michelangelo.

“Yeah, that was a very ‘whew’ moment when they said, ‘Hey, Nick, can you actually do a Leo?'” Abbey said. “Because I remember I was like, ‘That’s kind of my biggest competition.’ I initially auditioned for Donatello. I was like, ‘This is a sick role.’ They came back to me like, ‘Hey, can you try Michelangelo?’ And I was like, ‘Okay, cool.’ And I just did more of a chill-like, laid-back-like, very-like surfer. But I’m glad they gave me Donatello because I truly mean this, I literally love the way that Shamon plays Mikey because he had a new feel. It wasn’t just like the calm surfer dude. It was like just a fun-loving guy.”

Brady Noon shared his first experience with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and his favorite Turtle.

“For me, I gravitated towards the 2012 series on Nickelodeon,” Noon said. “Just when I come home from school every day, my siblings and I would just watch that show because it was always on. And that’s really where I first saw the turtles and really got a feel for them. But Raphael, oh, he’s been my favorite.”

The Last Ronin is a recent comic book miniseries that follows Michelangelo as he seeks vengeance against the ones who murdered his family. Shamon Brown Jr talks about whether he would take on that role.

“Yeah, I’d be open to that,” Brown Jr said. “The voice gets deeper a little bit [he deepens his voice], and you know, has to get a bit more gruesome. But it’s gonna be amazing. We’ll see. It could be 5 to 10 years from now. You never know.”
