With the My Hero Academia manga officially wrapped, fans came into this year’s Anime Expo panel with a bittersweet mix of closure and curiosity. Is there going to be a sequel? While no follow-up story was revealed, creator Kohei Horikoshi had something even more unexpected in store—something that’s sure to shake up the anime’s final season in a big way.

Thanks to his now fully cleared schedule, Horikoshi confirmed he’s working closely with Studio BONES on the upcoming eighth and final season of the anime. That involvement doesn’t just mean supervision—it means brand-new content. “Now that My Hero Academia’s manga has ended, I have been able to work more closely with the production studio on the anime and the production process,” he shared in a special message during the panel. “I’ve had the chance to suggest adding extra scenes and emotional layers to the performances.”

What those new scenes are remains under wraps, but knowing Horikoshi’s talent for character depth and high-stakes storytelling, it’s safe to say this fall’s swan song will offer fresh surprises even for readers who thought they knew how it all ends.

On the voice recording side of things, they revealed that the Japanese recording is currently underway. At the same time, the English dub has yet to begin. This likely puts the Japanese release slightly ahead in timing.

The panel also teased that something significant is coming up very soon—July 15, to be exact. While My Hero Academia fans recognize that date as Deku’s birthday, the panel hinted that they’ll unveil a “special present” on that date. No one said the word “trailer” out loud, but it doesn’t take a quirk to guess what might be on the way as the October premiere creeps closer.

My Hero Academia is a popular manga and anime series that follows Izuku Midoriya, a teenager who wants to be a superhero but is born without a Quirk (superpower) in a world where superpowers are common. My Hero Academia: You’re Next is the fourth film in the franchise and is headed to U.S. and Canadian theaters on October 11, 2024.

Synopsis: Deku, Bakugo, Todoroki and the rest of U.A. High Class 1-A must face off against Dark Might and the obscure crime organization under his control, the Gollini Family.

“It’s very complicated but I don’t want to lose to Dark Might so I’m doing my best as All Might,” Kenta Miyake, the Japanese voice actor of All Might and Dark Might, tells Nerd Reactor during the North American red carpet premiere.

“There’s a lot of ass to be kicked, I’ll tell you that,” Bakugo English voice actor Clifford Chaplin said. “This movie is pretty cool. It starts off with all the characters kind of broken up into some groups that we sort of never seen before. Bakugo is teamed up with some of his classmates that we haven’t seen them paired up before. As soon as it gets into the action, you get to see them really tearing down some bad guys until we get to the big climactic fight where of course you can expect the big three to really be bringing the heat.”

About My Hero Academia: You’re Next

Synopsis: “Next, it’s your turn!”

Those were the words All Might, Symbol of Peace, let out after defeating All For One, Symbol of Evil. All Might may no longer be the No. 1 hero of a society where most of the population has a superpowered Quirk, but Deku and his Hero Course classmates at U.A. High School are determined to carry on his will and ideals as heroes.

It was spring of Deku’s second year at U.A. when an all-out battle between heroes and villains broke out. Deku faced an overwhelmingly powerful Tomura Shigaraki and the two clashed violently, with both the heroes and the villains suffering heavy damages. The battle has since come to a temporary halt with Shigaraki’s retreat, but the time for their next confrontation draws closer with every second.

Japan is devastated by the all-out battle when a mysterious man suddenly appears. He presents himself as the one to replace All Might, becoming the new Symbol. He proclaims “Next, it’s my turn!” but turns out to be Dark Might! Despite resembling All Might in appearance, Dark Might’s ideals couldn’t be more different. He unleashes his Quirk for his own desires, creating a massive fort that begins to absorb the population one after another. Among the group accompanying Dark Might is Anna, a young woman with an unknown Quirk who is being targeted by a stoic individual in butler attire. Even though this person, Giulio, calls her “Miss Anna,” he seems to be after her life. Just what could their connection be to Dark Might?

Will Deku, Bakugo, Todoroki and the rest of U.A. High Class 1-A be able to protect the world by putting an end to Dark Might–the new Symbol and his desires? They must face off against Dark Might and the obscure crime organization under his control, the Gollini Family.

“Next, it’s our turn!”

My Hero Academia: You’re Next was released in Japan on August 2, 2024.

The much-anticipated seventh season of the hit anime series My Hero Academia will unfold this Saturday, May 4th, at 2:30 AM PT. Episodes will debut weekly on Crunchyroll. As a teaser, an official trailer was released recently and offers a glimpse into the upcoming season.

Before the premiere, Crunchyroll released recap episodes called My Hero Academia: Memories. These recap episodes are an excellent refresher for returning fans and newcomers not keen on rewatching the first six seasons. The seventh season of “My Hero Academia” will feature 25 episodes—most likely split into two cours. If that’s the case, the first part will include 12 episodes, and the second will consist of 13. If broadcast consecutively, the season could conclude by October.

What to Expect in Season 7

As society teeters on the brink of collapse and faith in heroes wanes, the upcoming season sets the stage for an intense, all-out battle. The devastating effects of the previous confrontations have left the heroes defeated. As a result, paving the way for Shigaraki, All For One, and other villains to plot their takeover. In the looming shadow of this dire situation, Izuku Midoriya, alongside his U.A. High classmates and other heroes—including a notable new ally from America—must rally. Together, they combine their strength against the most formidable opponent the world has ever known. This season promises to test their limits and determine if they can restore peace and stability to their world.

Over the course of six seasons, My Hero Academia has spun a rich storyline of growth, adversity, and resilience. All leading up to this pivotal moment. Fans have been with Deku every step of the way, from his humble beginnings as a dreamer to his current status as a promising hero-in-training. Each season has raised the stakes, intertwining the characters’ personal dreams with the wider impact of their battles and the massive losses along the way.

As Season 7 looms, the excitement is palpable. Especially since this season is leading up to the inevitable final battle against Shigaraki and All for One. The anticipation is electric, making the upcoming premiere on Saturday a must-see event for long-time fans and newcomers.

My Hero Academia hits Crunchyroll on May 4th at 2:30 AM PT, with new episodes debuting weekly.

Oh, and it’s not a workout without a complimentary smoothie—also orange.
