David Alan Grier is back as Dr. Ron in the third season of NBC’s medical mockumentary, St. Denis Medical, and this time he has a new rival, Damon Wayans as Dr. Highland. The two actors are known for their In Living Color sketches, especially with the Men on Film series, where they are like two peas in a pod talking about movies. In St. Denis Medical, Dr. Highland has taken over Dr. Ron’s position as the latter is recovering from heart surgery.

Grier has been performing for decades, and he has come to a point of being at ease with any material given to him.

“I’ve been doing it almost 50 years, you know, almost 50 years,” Grier tells Nerd Reactor about his acting career. “So what I mean is it’s allowed me to streamline my acting and creative process because a lot of things I worried about or stressed about as a young actor, I’m at peace with now. I can’t remember the last time I saw a scene or a scenario in a script where I went, ‘Oh, I don’t know how I’m going to get to this emotionally, or I have nothing to pull on. Yeah, I haven’t been through everything, but I’ve lived a long and wonderful life, and my instrument is good. It’s a well-dwelled machine, man.”

Grier enjoys being a rival on the screen of St. Denis Medical, and when Wayans and Grier are off the screen, the two are having a laugh.

“It’s more fun to be at each other,” Grier says. “That’s always more fun to play a villain, you know, to have an enemy. Then we can kiki at dinner later, you know, past the Poupon. It was really fun reconnecting with Damon, and I wish we could have chopped it up more through our characters and more evil doings. But it was fun. It was fun on and off. And I’m glad and I was humbled and happy that as soon as the offer went out, before I could even text Damon, he texted me and said, ‘Of course I’ll do it. I can’t wait to see you. We should hang out.’ And that was always really fun.”

St. Denis Medical Season 3 premieres today, November 2, 2026, at 8/7 c on NBC.

St. Denis Medical is the new NBC series that’s a mix between Superstore and ER, and it’s fitting since the creative team of the medical mockumentary sitcom is also behind Superstore. The series stars Wendi McLendon-Covey as Joyce, an executive director at St. Denis Medical; Allison Tolman as Alex, the empathic nurse; Kahyun as Serena, the self-assured nurse; and David Alan Grier as Ron, the grouchy emergency physician. Joining them is Josh Lawson as Bruce, a confident and cocky trauma surgeon.

Even though the doctors and nurses are saving lives, they are still human and will have to deal with each other. In the episode “A Peanut and Caramel-Filled Miracle,” Bruce is in a petty rivalry with Ron as they battle for the last candy bar at the hospital.

“[Kahyun] is the snack-centric actor in our ensemble, for sure,” Lawson jokes to Nerd Reactor. “I haven’t actually measured, but I think she’s thinking about snacks 80% of the time.”

Every sitcom needs a good old-fashioned Christmas special, and St. Denis Medical gave audiences one with its own twisted humor in the episode “Ho-Ho-Hollo,” which aired on December 17, 2024.

“It’s somewhat of a romantic storyline where a well-meaning fiance-to-be comes in with, unfortunately, a certain part of him caught in an engagement ring,” Lawson explained. “And lucky for him, it’s Bruce to the rescue. I gotta say, it’s my first-ever Christmas episode that I’ve ever shot. So that was a real thrill for me to do a Christmas special because I love them. It was brilliant. I was tickled by it.”

Lawson reprises his role as Kano in Mortal Kombat 2, and having a hospital like St. Denis Medical would be beneficial to a deadly tournament.

“I think Bruce would certainly think he is more than capable of joining the Mortal Kombat realm and fighting in any tournament against any combatant,” Lawson said. “I don’t think Bruce would, for a second, second guess his ability. What would his superpower be? Oh, God, every superpower I think he would, yeah. I mean, I wonder if there are any similarities, really, between Kano and Bruce. Confidence, I suppose, something I happen to lack. So it’s nice to be able to exercise it on screen.”

Get ready to see doctors and nurses in a new comedy where an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital tries to keep it all together while the staff deals with their daily struggles. St. Denis Medical stars David Alan Grier (Jumanji, In Living Color), Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaid, Elemental) and Allison Tolman (FX’s Fargo) and will premiere in November on NBC.

Grier plays Dr. Ron, an Emergency Doctor and a down-on-his-luck divorcee.

“I mean, my goal is always to say yes to a good script,” David Alan Grier said during the NBC TCA Summer Tour on Sunday, July 14th. “So it just happened that I was a doctor. It also happens that the character — we all know, there are some characters that you read and you think I can reach or get to. There are other characters that you just know, and this guy, he’s an old curmudgeon. That’s me. No, it wasn’t the medical stuff. That was incidental. I just responded to the script, and I say this begrudgingly. It was good. It was well written. It was intelligent.”

McLendon-Covey is Joyce, the executive director of the hospital and a former oncological surgeon with big ambitions for St. Denis Medical.

“All I wanted was to not play another mom right away because I did that for a long time,” McLendon-Covey said. “I think it’s well-documented that I can play moms, and respect to all moms everywhere. What I loved about this character is that she is not nurturing at all. Don’t come near her wanting a hug. She does not want your germs and she cannot keep a plant alive, but she is devoted to this hospital. That’s her baby, and this is her whole personality. So the fact that this came along right at the tail end of “The Goldbergs,” I’m the luckiest person in the world. I was not being strategic, necessarily. I just knew I didn’t want to be in the ’80s again since I’ve done it twice now and this was just such a gift.”
