Director Emma Tammi returns to the animatronic franchise with a steady confidence, guiding the sequel with a clearer sense of rhythm and tension. The story follows a new string of strange events tied to the pizzeria’s original location’s hidden past, sending the characters deeper into secrets that connect directly to long-standing game lore. The result is a plot that moves with urgency while opening the door to the larger mystery that the trilogy plans to explore.

Josh Hutcherson once again brings a quiet sense of vulnerability yet fervor attitude that fits his character’s growth from the first film, while Elizabeth Lail ignites a deeper emotional core with her secret childhood trauma that only serves to amplify the unknown fear ahead. Matthew Lillard remains a magnetic presence, and his scenes stay sharp in tone.

Skeet Ulrich was a surprise highlight for me. He enters the film with a steady presence that anchors the chaos while only being in very few scenes. There is a subtle tension in the way he delivers certain lines, however, and I found myself wishing the story had given him even more space to explore those moments. I left the theater hoping this will not be the last time we see him in this world. Plus, having the antagonists from the Scream in a film together only adds to that horror anticipation!

The pizzeria carries a familiar layout, yet something about it feels colder this time. The animatronics move with a weight that caught me off guard, as if each step carried intent. The voices behind these characters deserve real praise. Hearing them speak with tones that match their designs so well pulled me right back to the feeling of hearing these characters for the first time in the games. Their lines added personality while keeping their threat clear.

The visuals support that feeling completely. Long hallways stretch into darkness, and flickering lights feel ready to fail at any moment. The animatronic designs stay faithful to the games while adding touches that feel more natural on camera. There were moments when the room grew so quiet around me that every mechanical groan felt close enough to touch.

What impressed me most was how boldly the film leans into game lore. Details that fans have discussed for years finally appear -in a certain sort of way- in full view on screen. I felt real excitement recognizing elements that once lived only in theories and hidden clues. The script moves quickly, sometimes too quickly, yet the sense of urgency fits the survival horror experience. The story feels like a night shift that never allows a breath of calm.

The ending left me with the same mix of curiosity and dread I felt after finishing certain game chapters. The final moments reveal a story preparing to grow even larger, and the mid-credit teaser signals that the third film plans to deliver something massive. I walked out of the theater ready for answers, yet also ready to enjoy the suspense a bit longer.

By the time the lights rose, I realized how fully the film had pulled me back into this strange and familiar world. The scares land with confidence, the lore feels richer than ever, and the sense of momentum carries real weight as the story edges toward its final chapter. I walked out with that rare mix of satisfaction and curiosity, already thinking about how the next film might connect all the threads now in motion. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 proves that this series still has room to grow, and it left me hopeful that the finale will deliver the payoff that fans have been waiting for.

Crisol: Theater of Idols

The reveal trailer for Crisol: Theater of Idols sets the creepy atmosphere in the world of Hispania, a version of Spain where two religions are at war. Furthermore, it teases the disturbing inhabitants, the use of blood to refill ammo, and a haunting rendition of “Romance del Enamorado y la Muerte.”

I was able to get a little taste of the game during Summer Game Fest. From what I’ve played, it combines elements of FPS action and survival horror. Imagine parts of BioShock gameplay and aesthetic mixed in with parts of Resident Evil‘s puzzles and gloom. In addition, there was a giant, mechanical beast that followed me around, reminding me of Mr. X in Resident Evil 2.

The interesting game mechanic for Crisol: Theater of Idols involves the use of draining your life to refill your weapon’s ammo. As a result, this creates a tense gameplay loop of conserving your ammo and looking for health.

Sleep Awake

Sleep Awake will be out next year, and the trailer is teasing a trippy and chaotic nightmare for players. The game will take advantage of visuals and audio. As seen in the reveal, players will wander between sleep and death in a first-person psychedelic horror narrative experience.

This marks the first game from Eyes Out, founded by Cory Davis (the game designer behind Spec Ops: The Line) and Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails guitarist).

Synopsis: As Katja, players must navigate depraved death cults, otherworldly forces and the ever-present horror of The HUSH, the inexplicable disappearance of those who sleep.

Gemma is a roboticist who created M3GAN. She paired the AI with her niece, Cady, hoping that things would get better. Helping her are fellow colleagues Tess and Cole, but things take a turn for the worse when M3GAN starts to kill. In the end, both Cady and Tess are able to put a stop to the killer robot.

In M3GAN 2.0, Jen Van Epps reprises her role as Tess, who survived the wrath of M3GAN.

“I would say it was great because again, she has more agency,” Epps tells Nerd Reactor. “Tess has more agency, and that’s all I want. I wanted her voice to expand because in Tess’s own right, she herself is a genius, inventor scientist. M3GAN doesn’t get created without the help of Tess and Cole, like full thought, she may have a PhD too, you know what I’m saying? She’s a smart little cookie. So for her to be able to kind of flex that muscle and let the world see that Tess is more than just the moral arbiter of the film is really juicy. And I love that for my girl Tess.”

The sequel’s scope is grander as it explores different locations, and the tone is different as it goes from horror to action-adventure.

“It was definitely shocking,” she said. “I think it was a surprise. I’m like, ‘Whoa, we went from making it like a two-room movie with two lights to a full-on action adventure of people scaling walls and doing crazy things.’ It was a welcome surprise and it’s funny. I think M3GAN defies genre point blank. Traditional horror is great, and there’s a place for that, but I think there’s also a place for film and concepts that are trailblazers. And I think M3GAN honestly is a trailblazing franchise.”

About M3GAN 2.0

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules. 

Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around. 

With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I bitch is about to meet her match. 

Gerard Johnstone is back as the director. The film is produced by James Wan, Jason Blum and Allison Williams.

The film also stars Brian Jordan Alvarez, Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live, Hacks), Timm Sharp (Apples Never Fall, Percy Jackson and the Olympians) and Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water, What We Do in the Shadows).

Fear the Spotlight is a game developed by Cozy Game Pals, a small indie dev team consisting of a former Nickelodeon art director and a game designer who worked on Uncharted. Cozy Game Pals was originally a passion project for the duo to make smaller indie games, but they are now launching their first major title.

Vivian and Amy

Fear the Spotlight is a story about two high school friends, Vivian Singh and Amy Tanka. The former is a nerdy goody-goody, while the latter is a rebellious goth. One stormy night, they sneak into their high school to use the Ouija board on display in the library to contact the spirits of the dead. Unbeknownst to them, their school has a tragic past and a dark spirit has been following Amy around. They use the board and make contact with something that is not friendly, and all hell breaks loose.

Fear The Spotlight’s style is very much a throwback to the days of PlayStation One graphics. I found it oddly fitting that this game will be released not long after the remake of Silent Hill 2‘s release, but I feel like a lot of fans could find a lot of comparisons to the original Silent Hill. The game relies more on its atmosphere and storytelling than some of the elements of combat and stealth, but the latter is not the driving point of the game’s narrative.

The gameplay is more about building tension and dread, and sound plays a major factor in that. You can hear whispers from around the corner and small creaks in the floorboards become unnerving. There was a part in the game where a machine made a constant noise in your vicinity as you traversed the level. I didn’t even notice I had become accustomed to it until I finished a puzzle that turned off the machine, and I was met with uncomfortable complete silence.

Darkness and Shadows

This game is not about jump scares like many modern indie games. However, darkness and shadows play a major role in the game. A shadow could move in the darkness just outside your peripheral vision. You could find yourself staring down a hallway and seeing a dark figure peering from behind a corner. Much of the uneasiness you feel from playing Fear the Spotlight comes from navigating the school’s dark corridors alone, armed with only a flashlight. You do pick up other items along the way, like a screwdriver or a wrench, but a majority of these items are only to help assist you with the game’s puzzles.

Silent Hill and Resident Evil Inspirations

The team of Cozy Game Pals was clearly inspired by Silent Hill and the PlayStation One era of Resident Evil because I easily found myself right at home with the game’s puzzle. They were challenging enough that a few times I was stumped, but I never felt the need to turn to the internet for help. I also like how the developers used the physicality of the puzzles as a way for the player to interact with the game. As the player, you must click and drag to connect wires or open panels. I would have loved to have seen the Nintendo DS version of this game because I feel like the puzzles would have easily lent themselves to that handheld.

While I did mention the game is not combat-heavy, there is a boss and constant threat, The Spotlight. He is the main baddie of the game and you will encounter him in different areas of the school as you navigate through the game. You can’t fight him, so your best bet is to hide outside his vision and sneak around. This can be tricky because when The Spotlight walks, everything around him begins to burn, which can damage your character. He also sometimes lingers in a central area where you need to visit several different rooms to open up the next section of the map. He’ll even come into the room you’re in if you complete a puzzle or task that makes a lot of noise. His identity and what he represents are an intricate part of the story that you’ll begin to unravel as you progress through the game.

Different Perspectives

One thing I have yet to mention is that you can play Fear the Spotlight from both Amy’s and Vivian’s perspectives. Once you have played through Vivian’s version of the story, the option to play as Amy becomes available. I like this feature because even though they both are part of this story, their playthroughs are completely different. Vivan’s story is more about uncovering the mystery of what happened at the school so many years ago. A fire broke out and killed several students. She’s also trying to rescue Amy from the dark spirit that has been haunting her.

Amy’s story is more about her personal family issues and the events that have led her to be at this school with Vivian. It’s a far more personal story and she even has her own bad guy that is not the Spotlight. I like that the game does not retread any of the areas or puzzles used in Vivan’s playthrough.

Final Reaction

I thoroughly enjoyed playing Fear The Spotlight. It reminded me of the games that got me into survival horror but with a storyline that could easily have been a Goosebumps book or an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? I was completely engaged with the story from beginning to end and wanted to see Vivian and Amy make it out the other side. The best way I could explain this game is if Life is Strange and the very first Silent Hill game made a baby, it would turn out to be Fear The Spotlight. I can’t wait to see what Blumhouse Games and Cozy Game Pals do next.

Fear The Spotlight will be released on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 22nd.

Fear the Spotlight comes from Cozy Game Pals, an indie dev made up of a Nickelodeon art director and a game developer who has worked on such titles as The Last of Us and Journey. Fear the Spotlight follows Vivian and her friend Amy as they try to piece together the mystery of a fire that broke out and killed a lot of kids at their high school many years ago. One night, Vivian and Amy break into the school and hold a seance in hopes of contacting the spirits of those lost that day, but they end up contacting something else and are both plunged into a world of darkness and monsters.

Fear the Spotlight feels very familiar in that its art style is a homage to the PS1 era of graphics and its story is also a nod to classic ’90s horror films. Much of the gameplay revolves around solving puzzles and stealth. The game is more narrative-focused and really emphasizes the atmosphere when things start to get spooky. The in-game audio can be very immersive when playing with headphones on. Walking through the school alone at night you can hear that it is raining outside. It’s the perfect time to bust out the Ouija and hold a seance. What could possibly go wrong?

While we didn’t get a lot of time with Fear the Spotlight, it was more than enough to get an idea of what is to come once it is fully released. We’ve already seen how successful indie devs like Puppet Combo and Chilla’s Art have been with similarly styled games. There is a huge audience of players who enjoy retro-styled horror games like this and I think they will thoroughly enjoy Fear the Spotlight when it releases on September 15th later this year.

Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister.

As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

The film is directed by Jeff Wadlow and written by Jeff Wadlow & Greg Erb & Jason Oremland. It’s produced by Jason Blum and Jeff Wadlow.

The film stars DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, with Veronica Falcon, and Betty Buckley.
