One of Dark Matter’s themes is about regret and whether one should change their life for a different future. If you had the chance to do it all over again, would you?

That’s the question we asked Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, the stars of Dark Matter. The second season has debuted on Apple TV+, and it continues the adventures of the Dessen family as they try to survive alternate worlds and alternate versions of Jason Desson, portrayed by Edgerton.

“Personally I think there’s an inclination when life doesn’t feel like it’s working out to look back and diagnose the problem being further into your past, go, ‘It’s because of this that I’m in this bad place,'” Edgerton tells Nerd Reactor. “But, you know, the Chinese philosophy that bad things can lead to good and good things may actually lead to the next thing that’s bad. The accumulation of all things is why you’re at the place you’re at right now.

“I’m in a happy place, so I’m not diagnosing there being any problem and all the bad things that have come in my past, I’m happy for them because I am where I am. But there is a fascination with looking back and wondering how did that affect where I am or why I have what I have.”

People’s backgrounds are different, and Connelly acknowledges that it’s a difficult question to answer.

“I think that’s really hard to answer because we’re all in such different circumstances,” Connelly said. “I mean, some people are in situations that are oppressive, and they don’t have the freedom to make choices in their own lives. Some of us are in places where it’s easier to make ourselves believe that we’re not able to make choices in our own lives, but it’s difficult since we’re all in such different places. It’s so difficult to answer such a big question, I think.”

After the events of the first season, the Dessen family have to leave their home in order to survive. What does home mean when all they really have is each other?

“To me, that’s home,” Edgerton replied. “To me, home is my family. You could be anywhere. What the challenge becomes, and this is sort of partly with having a growing teenage boy, is that we have to be complicit in a choice to stay or to go together or to be in a place together. But also we want to make sure that the three of us together are finding a way that we’re okay with those choices, and it becomes very complex.”

“And the way that if home is each other, they get to a place that’s pretty dysfunctional,” Connelly added. “So they have to sort that out together.”

Dark Matter Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+, with new episodes releasing weekly until October 30, 2026.
