Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Shaun of the Dead) serves as the director and co-writer for the new The Running Man film. Playing the lead role of Ben Richards is Glen Powell, who must survive a deadly reality TV show. On his trail is Lee Pace as Evan McCone, the leader of the hunters.

If the actors were to be in a real-life The Running Man, how would they plan things?

“I think about this a lot,” Pace tells Nerd Reactor. “The most difficult thing about the game is that you have to mail those tapes in, right? So you have to stay in a place where you’re vulnerable to other people spotting you. Because my plan would be to go out into the middle of the wilderness and hide out, take a boat into the ocean where no one’s going to find you.

“But you got to mail the tapes in. So I would do what Ben Richards does, which is look to my friends. Find friends, and find help along the way. No one can do it alone. No one’s going to get out. No one’s going to do it alone. Whenever you’re having a hard time in your life and the odds are against you, you got to reach out for help.”

One of the elements that Wright wanted to capture for the film was focusing on the point of view of Ben Richards.

“A big part of the book to me that was really powerful to me, because I read it as a teenager and I read it before I’d seen the 1987 film, is that the entire film is from Ben Richards’ point of view, as it is in the novel, which really stayed with me,” Wright explained. “And this is something that I read nearly 40 years ago. And I thought that in terms of working on the adaptation, it’s absolutely what we wanted to bring to the screen. It’s like, you’re with Ben Richards in every scene, and you experience the game as he does. You don’t cut away to the baddies. You don’t cut back to the network building. You stay with Ben Richards. And I hope that makes it a much more thrilling experience.”

Powell sees Ben as this character who represents the frustration and anger of everyone in that world.

“There’s this power, this network, that is keeping everybody down,” Powell explained. “It’s this oppressive system that doesn’t allow people to win, no matter how hard they work. I think that sort of frustration is something that I feel is universal in all of us. The world that Stephen King built is very much the world we live in right now. Even though it looks a little different, you can see a lot of overlaps. The Venn Diagram in the middle is eerily large, and I just wanted to embody that universal idea of the underdog, the guy who is taking on the system, the ordinary guy against extraordinary odds.”

About The Running Man

Synopsis: In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television—a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite—and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

The film is directed by Edgar Wright and written by Michael Bacall and Michael Bacall & Edgar Wright. It’s based on the novel by Stephen King.

Joining Glen Powell are William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, Sean Hayes, Katy O’Brian with Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin.

The Running Man dashes into theaters on November 14, 2025.

Before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man even begins, there’s an unavoidable comparison to be made. While Stephen King’s 1982 novel (written under his Richard Bachman pseudonym) was a bleak, adrenaline-charged story, the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film flipped that narrative into a neon-soaked spectacle that turned dystopia into prime-time entertainment. Wright’s take, however, follows King’s novel closely — removing the over-the-top camp that made the ’87 version so iconic. The result is a film that’s intellectually faithful, visually slick, and thematically loaded.

In other words, Wright’s Running Man is more cerebral than explosive. Instead of a blood-sport arena, the story unfolds across a fractured America where the gap between the wealthy elite and the exploited poor has become an unbridgeable chasm. The entertainment value this time isn’t in the physical hunt, but in how the Network manipulates perception by broadcasting propaganda as truth. This approach, while ambitious, means the film lacks the kinetic energy fans might expect. The tension is there, but it’s quieter, driven more by ideology than by spectacle.

That’s especially apparent in how often Wright interrupts the momentum to show Ben Richards recording messages for “The Running Man” (a requirement by the show). Additionally, the film has modernized clips that mimic YouTube commentary, which serves as exposition. They’re smart in concept, but they also disrupt the film’s rhythm. Each cutaway halts the flow just as the story builds steam, creating a stop-start pacing that might frustrate those hoping for the relentless chase promised by the title.

The Running Man trades spectacle for substance, delivering a sharp, timely adaptation truer to Stephen King’s original vision.

Still, Wright’s thematic accuracy deserves credit. The film doesn’t just adapt King’s warnings about state control and mass media but amplifies them. The messaging is blunt, at times almost too on-the-nose, but undeniably potent. It’s an unsettling mirror of modern society, and Wright refuses to let the audience look away. The film’s stylistic flourishes drive home the idea that everyone’s watching, and everyone’s complicit.

The real MVP, though, is Glen Powell. As Ben Richards, Powell sidesteps the hardened hero archetype and instead delivers a grounded, emotionally resonant performance. His natural charm softens the character’s edges, making him easy to root for and genuinely sympathetic. You feel his exhaustion, his moral clarity, and his desperate will to survive — not just for himself, but for a world that’s long stopped caring. Where Schwarzenegger’s Ben was a one-man revolution, Powell’s is just a man trying to tell the truth in a system built to erase it.

Overall, The Running Man may not be the thrill ride some expect. Still, it’s a sharp, sobering reflection on how entertainment, propaganda, and surveillance have blurred into the same feed. It trades spectacle for substance, muscle for message. Now, although that might leave adrenaline junkies wanting, it gives King’s original vision the relevance it’s always deserved.

Rating: 3/5 atoms

Paramount Pictures has released its first look at Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the 1982 novel by Stephen King, The Running Man. Mind you, if that name sounds familiar, it’s probably because this isn’t the first adaptation (that would be the 1987 film of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger). This film, however, seems to take things up a few notches and will send you on a wild ride.

Starring Glen Powell (Hit Man, Twisters) and directed by the cinematic genius Edgar Wright, this film not only takes similar steps as the original story, but puts you right in the driver’s seat!

About The Running Man

Edgar Wright is no stranger to tackling chaotic films while presenting them in a cohesive way, as we’ve seen him do it with works like Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and most recently, Last Night in Soho. Coupled with the incredible eye of Cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung (2003’s Oldboy, Hotel Artemis, Last Night in Soho), this film looks to immerse moviegoers into a world of high-octane fueled action scenes and blunt yet recognizable humor.

In addition to Powell in the lead role, The Running Man also features Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Michael Cera (Juno).

The Running Man will release in theaters on November 7 from Paramount Pictures.

Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead) is returning The Running Man to the big screen. This time, it’s based on Stephen King’s original novel, written under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

The movie already has a strong cast lined up: Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell plays the lead role of Ben Richards, Josh Brolin plays the shadowy creator of the deadly game, Dan Killian, and Colman Domingo steps in as the charismatic host of the show, Bobby Thompson.

“We literally just finished shooting less than a week ago,” said Wright. Edgar Wright also talked about how the film will follow King’s novel more than the 1987 film. But suppose you’ve only seen the 1987 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In that case, you might wonder what the original story is about.

Published in 1982, The Running Man takes place in a bleak 2025 where America is ruled by a corrupt government and society is glued to violent reality TV shows. The most infamous one is The Running Man, a nationwide manhunt in which contestants are given a head start and then hunted down by professional killers. If they survive 30 days, they win a massive cash prize.

Glen Powell’s character, Ben Richards, is an ordinary guy down on his luck. His daughter is gravely ill, and in desperation, he volunteers for the game to earn money for her treatment. But once he’s out in the world, it’s not just the Hunters he has to worry about—they encourage every citizen to hunt him in for a reward. It’s a brutal, nonstop chase filled with paranoia, desperation, and tension.

Unlike the action-packed, arena-style chaos of the Schwarzenegger film, the book is more of a gritty, grounded chase-across-America thriller. The CinemaCon footage shows Glen Powell’s Ben Richards on the run inside an apartment building, fending off attacks from pilots and dodging grenades thrown his way. Colman Domingo’s over-the-top character hypes up the chaos by looking into the camera and shouting, “The thrill of the hunt! Can you feel it?! This is America goddamit and we don’t put up with no bullshit.” As the action ramps up, Powell defiantly yells, “I’m still here, you shiteaters!”

“Probably what I get for asking Tom Cruise for advice on using a stunt double.” Powell said before the clip. “Now that I’ve gone through fire, I can say I’ve never worked harder on a movie in my life.”

The Running Man hits theaters on November 7th.
