The special Batman and Batman Returns night will be shown in Dolby Vision for vivid picture quality and Dolby Atmos for immersive sound. The films will be screened exclusively at over 160 Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres in the U.S.

Tim Burton’s Batman took on a darker tone compared to the campy show in the ’60s starring Adam West and Burt Ward. The Joker was played by Jack Nicholson, and he was an evil and maniacal villain who gave me nightmares for that scene where he turned an enemy into a crispy corpse. Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman was simply to die for, and Danny DeVito as The Penguin was grotesque yet engaging.

With the films in Dolby Vision, expect to experience deeper blacks, sharper contrast, and more vivid colors. As for the immersive sound with Dolby Atmos, I can only imagine how the Batwing and Batmobile will sound with Danny Elfman’s score playing in the background.

“I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity,
beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting,” said filmmaker Tim Burton in a statement. “Dolby Atmos
and Vision brought it all to life in a fresh way.”

Nerd Reactor participated in a roundtable interview with other outlets during the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice junket in New York City.

Nerd Reactor: And so watching [Beetlejuice Beetlejuice], I felt like Michael Keaton, he never skipped decades’ worth of it.

Tim Burton: That’s scary as s***, man. We didn’t rehearse. We didn’t do anything, right? So he comes on and it was truly like… demon possession, and I feel like a time warp. You’re right. It was unnerving, it was great, it was exciting, but it was really also disturbing. [laughs]

Nerd Reactor: Yeah, I guess my question would be, like, just throughout the process, what were your thoughts behind seeing Michael Keaton come to life again?

Tim Burton: Yeah, it was great. I mean, that’s what gave the film its energy, you know. We’d make up stuff every day, which is kind of hard to do when you’re dealing with all live effects. But we did it, and I worked with the effects people who, in the spirit of the movie, would make these things very quickly. Michael and I talked about this from the very beginning. That was very important to the spirit, especially with all the technology, we can do all this stuff, whatever, we just wanted to kind of not think about a sequel or anything, but just go and just make the movie. And so like you said that energy of what he brought back to it was amazing and crucial.

Today, Warner Bros. Pictures has dropped the official teaser trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the highly anticipated sequel that’s 36 years in the making. A few of the original cast members are back including Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia. Joining them is Jenna Ortega as Astrid, who plays Lydia’s daughter.

The teaser trailer opens with a familiar tune, the cover of Harry Belafonte’s “Banana Boat (Day-O).” And like the original film, we see a small miniature town, and that can only mean that someone is going to say Betelguese’s name three times, and he’ll probably be up to no good.

“He just got back into it,” Burton said in an interview about Keaton returning as Betelgeuse. “It was kind of scary for somebody who was maybe not that overly interested in doing it. It was such a beautiful thing for me to see all the cast, but he, sort of like demon possession, just went right back into it.”

The conditions had to be right for Burton and Keaton to reunite for a sequel, even if it was decades later.

“Unless it felt right, he had no burning desire to do it,” the filmmaker said. “I think we all felt the same way. It only made sense if it had an emotional hook.”

It was the three different generations of the Deetz women that sparked something in Burton.

“I so identified with the Lydia character, but then you get to all these years later, and you take your own journey, going from cool teenager to lame adult, back and forth again,” he revealed. “That made it emotional, gave it a foundation. So that was the thing that really truly got me into it.”

Beetlejuice mania continues this year with the North American Tour of Beetlejuice, which includes the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, CA.

Tim Burton is back as the director for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice along with Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara reprising their roles as Delia and Lydia, respectively.

Last year, Michael Keaton returned as Batman in the 2023 Flash movie, which would be 31 years later since Batman Returns. This year, he’ll return as another fan-favorite character, the Ghost with the Most, aka Betelgeuse.

In the original film, Winona Ryder’s Lydia was an aspiring photographer who was able to see ghosts, and Catherine O’Hara’s Delia was Lydia’s stepmother. Their lives get turned upside down when Beetlejuice enters the picture, who wants to wreak havoc in the mortal world.

Betelgeuse was the main antagonist in the first film, but will he be the main antagonist in the sequel? What we do know is that the film takes place decades later with a death in the family. Tim Burton is keeping quiet with details, but judging from the images released, perhaps Lydia’s father, Charles Deetz (Jeffrey Jones), bites the dust.
