Companion thrives on surprises, so I strongly recommend avoiding the official trailer and promotional materials to savor the experience. Even a quick Google search may result in spoiling key twists. That said, the film is a delightful blend of hilarity, intensity, and suspense, driven by Drew Hancock’s sharp direction and script. The performances by Quaid, Thatcher and the rest of the cast elevate the film into something truly memorable.

The story follows a group of friends on a remote trip for relaxation and bonding. Their getaway takes a dark turn, resulting in chaos and bloodshed. Hancock expertly balances suspense, drama, comedy, and gruesome moments, creating a film that is both entertaining and shocking. Watching it in a packed theater during Beyond Fest was a highlight, with the audience erupting in laughter and gasps throughout. The early surprises and the relentless pacing kept us on the edge of our seats.

The ensemble cast is wonderfully dynamic. Jack Quaid portrays a boyfriend attempting to put his girlfriend, played by Thatcher, at ease since she struggles to fit in with the group. Harvey Guillén and Lukas Gage steal the spotlight as Eli and Patrick, an entertaining couple with infectious chemistry. Megan Suri and Rupert Friend round out the cast, adding depth to the group. One standout scene – a flashback of Guillén and Gage meeting at a party – perfectly captures the film’s blend of humor and craziness.

Companion is a fantastic way to kick off the year for fans of horror, comedy and thrillers. It’s easily on my list of favorite films of the year, thanks to its fresh and witty script, talented cast, and compelling premise. From start to finish, it’s a hell of a ride.

Jack Quaid, who voices the titular superhero, gives us an update on the show’s progress.

“I recorded the first episode the other day,” Jack Quaid said in a roundtable interview during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. “It’s going really well. I love the show. I’m so excited for you guys to see that season.”

Voicing Lois Lane is Alice Lee, who shared with us earlier this year how happy she was about Lois and Jimmy Olsen finding out Superman’s secret early on.

“Yeah, I love that Jimmy always knew,” Alice Lee tells Nerd Reactor. “I think that’s so sweet, and it’s cool that we got to know earlier rather than dragging it on. I love that. That’s a fresh take, like, they find out pretty soon. Lois knows and now we get to just explore all of their relationships from a different angle, not just constantly the secret. So we get to find out different things and go on different adventures, but also, just with all the secrets revealed. I think that’s super refreshing. So I love that our show did that. Because also Lois is really smart. It would be weird for her not to catch on. She’s not stupid.”

Will there be a sequel to The Safe Man from author Michael Connelly? Will he get more of his written works produced into an Audible series? The team wants to do more, so there is hope.

“We have a really good team,” author Michael Connelly tells Nerd Reactor in a roundtable interview during San Diego Comic-Con 2024. “The two producers want to do more. I can see a sequel to Safe Man, hopefully, but there are some stories I wrote. I wrote this one called Mulholland Dive, a play on the street, Mulholland Drive, about a car that goes over and the investigation. And I think that would lend itself to it. It’s funny; this thing opened the gate, and now my two producers are looking through everything I’ve ever written, even going back into the ’90s, trying to find something else that we hopefully can give the same treatment to.”
