This year is the year of the villains for Fred Hechinger, who portrays Emperor Caracalla in Gladiator II and Chameleon in Kraven the Hunter. Caracalla is an antagonist who delights in bloodshed. As for the Chameleon in Kraven the Hunter, not much is known. However, in the comic books, he’s a Spider-Man villain who is a master of disguise.

In an interview with Nerd Reactor, Hechinger talks about how much fun it is to play villains.

“I mean, that’s what they say, right? Like, villains have the most fun,” Hechinger said. “But I guess the other adage is everyone’s like the hero of their own story. And so I will say, when you’re playing someone, the main job, the only focus is how do you find all of them, right? How do you look at and give life to their whole self, all the contradictions, all the complexity? How are you both uncompromising and in some ways, kind of tough on them, but also tender and loving of them at the same time and maybe in equal measure? And I think that’s just like a worthy challenge any which way.”

Joaquin Phoenix portrayed Commodus as an evil emperor in Gladiator, the classic historical epic film by director Ridley Scott. With Gladiator II, there are 2 evil emperors: Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Emperor Geta and Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) as Emperor Caracalla.

Death and blood are common themes in the Gladiator films, and Emperor Caracalla is someone who welcomes them.

“Well, Caracalla delights in bloodshed, so in some ways, he’s the opposite of squeamish,” Hechinger tells Nerd Reactor. “Yeah? Me, I don’t know. I can’t speak for in this case.”

Also starring in the film is Denzel Washington as Macrinus, who is similar to Proximo from the first film in terms of bringing in slaves and training them to become gladiators.

“It’s just a blessing. Like every day was such a pleasure to act with them,” Hechinger said of Quinn and Washington. “I think when you work with people that are as magnificent and in the moment as they are, it means that every scene, even when you know it really well, becomes surprising in its own right. All these discoveries pop up. So it was a great pleasure.”

Ancient Rome was brought to life by Ridley’s direction and the film crew, and it made the actor forget that he was in a movie.

“Ridley always says, he goes, ‘I’m gonna give you the best off-camera action you’ve ever seen, because no matter where the camera is, you’re watching these battles over and over, and they’re incredible,'” Hechinger explained. “I mean, the stunt team on this is magnificent. Their work is really major. And it actually takes your breath away. Also, Rome is all around you. You know, you have full crowds screaming at the top of their lungs, and you forget that you’re making a movie. You really do.”

At CinemaCon 2024, Paramount Pictures gave those in attendance their first look at Ridley Scott’s much anticipated Gladiator 2. In the footage, we find out that Lucius is a gladiator now, and Denzel plays a significant role as an arms and commodity dealer with close ties to him. Ridley Scott revealed that Lucius has been isolated “in the wilderness” for 15 years, estranged from his mother, who presumes him dead. Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal portrays a Roman general in the film. Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger are playing co-emperors Caracalla and Geta.

Encyclopedia Britannica describes Caracalla as a figure of vehemence and cruelty, traits he reportedly emphasized to instill fear. Geta’s real-life story features political strife with his brother, culminating in Caracalla murdering Geta during a familial conflict, setting a tense backdrop for their characters in Gladiator 2.

Also, the sequel hints that Maximus’s legacy profoundly influences Lucius’s journey, inspired by his defiance against the empire. In Gladiator 2, Lucius, supported by Denzel’s character, seems poised to challenge another despotic power.

Gladiator 2 also features many gladiatorial battles, including fights with baboons, a rhino, and an innovative aquatic naval battle staged in the Colosseum. A key highlight is the clash between Paul Mescal’s Lucius and Pedro Pascal’s Roman general, which promises to be a central conflict in the film.
