Warner Bros. brought Dune: Part Three to CinemaCon 2026 with Denis Villeneuve, Timotheé Chalamet, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa. Villeneuve says that this next chapter takes place 17 years after the second film and is a faster, more emotional, and more action-packed.

Rather than simply repeating what came before, the film looks ready to show the cost of everything Paul Atreides has become. The world has changed, the visions and nightmares have turned real, and Paul is now living with the consequences. The story was described as a redemption arc and as a broken love story between Paul and Chani. That emotional split appears to be the heartbeat of the movie.

Timothée Chalamet framed Paul as a man who has become his own worst vision. He is still trying to hold onto part of himself while protecting the people he loves, even as he takes his place as a dark emperor. On the other hand, Zendaya’s Chani also seems poised to fight for more here. The years have not been kind to the world of Dune, and they have not been kind to her either. Even under that pressure, the film appears ready to keep her at the center of the story rather than leaving her in the background.

One of the more intriguing reveals involved Duncan Idaho. His body has been regenerated from Duncan’s cells, but he is no longer the same man. They present him as a gift to Paul, yet also described in stark terms: “he’s hate now.” That alone hints at a Duncan who could be both tragic and dangerous.

Finally, attendees were shown footage of the first 7 minutes of the film, which immediately set a harsher tone. Sirens wail as ships descend toward Paul’s home planet of Caladan. Explosions light up the sky, and the falling ships crash toward the surface. The sequence has a war-film feel, with a heavy sense of dread hanging over everything.

Inside the dropships, soldiers sit in near silence. The mood is tense and carries a strong Saving Private Ryan energy. These soldiers are Fremen, and they’re led by Stilgar (Javier Bardem). One of them talks about “water falling from the sky” because for the first time, they’re about to see rain. Remember, for the Fremen, rain is not normal. It is something almost unbelievable. Once on the ground, they move ahead.

The calm does not last. Stilgar warns everyone to wait, then shouts for them to get down. Sentry guns fire, spraying bullets as soldiers and ships are hit. A tower rises from the ground, turning the battlefield into a trap.

Stilgar keeps the group moving, brushing aside the moment with, “Enough sightseeing.” From there, Stilgar calls out coordinates, and a giant missile slams down toward the tower. The Fremen ask for the Shield Piercer, and Stilgar asks for three shots, but even that is not enough. The blasts bounce off, and some of the fire comes back toward them.

The footage sounds like a brutal opening, one built on fear, confusion, and overwhelming firepower. It also sets the stage for a much more war-driven film than audiences may expect.

After that opening, Warner Bros. showed a montage of scenes from the rest of the film. Paul tells Duncan, “You’re an Atreides, I need Duncan Idaho,” suggesting that their relationship will be a major part of the story. The montage also teases the growing divide between Paul and Chani. At the end, Chani stands against Paul on a battlefield while a sandworm bursts out of the sand.

For longtime fans, Dune: Part Three looks like the chapter where everything finally comes crashing together. It’s an emotional conflict on a huge scale. Paul is no longer just facing destiny. He is trapped inside what he created. We can’t wait.

Nerd Reactor was invited to the Dune: Part 3 trailer event, and director Denis Villeneuve introduced the cast members, including Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Javier Bardem. The cast and director discussed the upcoming film, including exploring new worlds and character motivations.

“I brought the camera to areas of the planet that you guys have not seen before,” Villeneuve said. “And we are visiting new planets as well.”

Zendaya reprises her role as Chani, and in the teaser trailer we see her and Paul Atreides choosing names for their child.

“These movies have meant so much to me over the years,” Zendaya explained. “I’ve literally been able to grow up in my entire 20s doing them, and so they have such a special place in my heart.”

Anya Taylor-Joy is Alia Atreides, Paul’s sister and was teased in Dune: Part 2.

“The one thing that she really feels most strongly about is her love and devotion to her brother,” Taylor-Joy said. “That is the only person who’s ever made her feel like she makes sense. He’s understood her from before she was even born, and she will do anything for him.”

Pattinson will be playing Scytale, who has plans to dethrone Paul.

“I wouldn’t say he’s a conventional bad guy,” Pattinson recalled. “I don’t think he is. He might have been a good guy.” [laughs]

About Dune: Part 3

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan, Dune: Part Three is based on the novel Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert and delivers the epic conclusion to Villeneuve’s trilogy. The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach De Bankolé, with Charlotte Rampling, with Anya Taylor-Joy, and Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem, and features newcomers Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke.

The film will release in theaters on December 18, 2026.

Link Your Funcom Account

The first thing you need to do is make sure your Steam and Funcom accounts are connected. From the main menu click on the Account button at the bottom right of the screen. You can also use shortcut keys listed below.

Keyboard + Mouse – A
Xbox Style Controller – View (or Select as we know it as) button
DualShock or DualSense – Options Button (Press the touchpad as a button)

Funcom’s site will ask you to login to their site with your steam account. Follow whatever steps the site says to follow to link your Steam account to the game. With the game only on Steam at this point, you will want to make sure that anybody you play Dune: Awakening with is your friend on Steam.

Getting on the Correct Server

Now that your accounts are linked, so is your friends list. You will be able to easily see which friends are in which servers. Dune Awakening is broken down into Worlds that contain Servers. The game’s menus and UI do a very good job of showing you which Worlds and Servers your friends have characters in.

The very first time you start up the game you will be presented with an option to Play or one to browse the Servers. Make sure you click on the Servers button.

Dune Awakening Auto-Detects your Region, so the first step is to make sure your game is set to the same region your friends are in. Sometimes your friends are in a different region than yours. At the bottom left of the Servers screen is the regions menu. Below are the button shortcuts to access the Region menu.

Keyboard+Mouse – C
Xbox Style Controller – Y
DualShock or DualSense – Triangle

The different regions in Dune Awakening are:

• Asia
• Europe
• North America
• Oceana
• South America

Once your correct region is selected and confirmed, you will see that there are 4 submenus in the Servers menu: OFFICIAL, FRIENDS, RECENT, PRIVATE.

For a public server choose the FRIENDS tab and for a private server choose PRIVATE. (Private servers are pay only through 3rd party companies GPortal, Nitrado, and XRealm).

Choosing the FRIENDS submenu should shorten the Worlds list significantly. If you have a lot of friends playing the game or you choose the PRIVATE submenu, you will want to make sure you sort by the FRIENDS column. When you do this, the number of friends you have in that World should appear under that column.

Once you have the correct World, you will want to click the caret at the right side next to the ping bars to open the list of servers in that world.

As with most friends, you should have been given the name of the World/Server your friends are in. However, the servers all start with the word Sietch, so make sure you are choosing the correct one with the friends you are trying to join in it.

If you hover your cursor over the Server a popup appears that lists which friends are in that server.

You know what to do next – Join the Server and create your character.

Partying Up

Before you can play with friends you are required to play through a short set of Introduction missions. You will know when this mission chain is over when you first encounter the Shai Hulud, i.e. the Sandworm.

Now that you are in the same Server as your friend, you need to be able to actually play with your friends. Dune: Awakening’s quests, called Journeys, has a system that allows certain parts of quests to be completed by anyone in your active party.

You can tell in the quest description which ones they are by a Party icon next to that particular part of the quest, with a corresponding footnote which states Completable by a party member.

Once you and your friends are online together, you will need to Party up. Head to the Social menu which can be accessed by clicking the SOCIAL button, which appears at the bottom of every subsection of the Player Menu. The Player Menu is accessed by pressing shortcut keys while in the game world.

DualShock or DualSense – Options Button (Press the touchpad as a button)

You should now be on the PLAYERS screen. On Keyboard + Mouse, you can press P to quickly get to the PLAYERS screen.

Next you will want to make sure your friend is online. They should appear under the ONLINE (SAME SERVER) list and not under the ONLINE (OTHER) list.

Click the Party Invite button, which is the far right button next to the player name. Invites will pop up on the player’s screen when they are out of the menus and in the world. The invite can also be found in the PLAYERS menu under the PARTY INVITES tab.

The second way to invite the player to a party is by clicking on their name in the PLAYERS menu. A Player card will pop up and you which contains an Invite to Party button.

Another invite method is done in the world via the Interact With menu. This can be accessed by focusing your cursor dot on the other player and pressing the shortcut key listed below and selecting Invite to Party

Xbox Style Controller – Hold X
DualShock or DualSense – Hold Square

Guilds

A big part of Dune Awakening is GUILDS. It cost 1000 Solari to form a GUILD.

The GUILDS menu is found in the SOCIAL menu. See above on how to access the SOCIAL screen. On Keyboard + Mouse, the GUILDS menu shortcut is the letter O.

This menu is how you create your GUILD.

Once created you can invite other players by going to the INVITE PLAYER tab in the GUILDS screen and type in their Steam name or character name. You can also invite players via some of the same methods you invite a player to a party.

In the PLAYERS screen, you can invite players to your GUILD via the Player Card or in the world via the Interact With menu (see above how to access those).

If you are the one being invited to a GUILD, then this is the menu you go into to find the invite. If you are in the world at the time of the invite, it will also pop up on your screen just like a PARTY INVITE would.

Permissions

The last aspect this guide will cover is PERMISSIONS. There are 5 levels of PERMISSIONS: OWNER, CO-OWNER, ASSOCIATE, GUILD, PUBLIC.

If you want to give someone access to your vehicle, building in your base, or anything in it, you will need to change the permissions on that particular item in its MANAGE menu

To access the MANAGE menu there are shortcut keys:

Keyboard+Mouse – Hold F
Xbox Style Controller – Hold Y
DualShock or DualSense – Hold Triangle

These shortcuts are how you access the PERMISSIONS settings for anything in your base.

The SUB-FIEF CONSOLE is how you set PERMISSIONS for that whole base. When you access the MANAGE menu for your console, you can edit the level of anyone on your friends list for that base. This will update every door, storage container, plus Crafting and Utility Workbenches.

You can also change the permission level of a particular door, Storage Container, or Crafting and Utility Workbench. Say you want to put a public blood purifier outside. You can make just that blood purifier PUBLIC.

For Vehicles, this shortcut menu will bring up a radial wheel. From here you will need to go to MANAGER VEHICLE and then to the KEY symbol, which is the PERMISSIONS menu for vehicles.

If you want to change the PERMISSIONS of a particular friend, you can do so via the EDIT PERMISSIONS menu in their PLAYER CARD. (See above on how to access PLAYER CARDS).

Once you have PERMISSIONS set then building, crafting, and storing, all your hard-earned resources and loot can be streamlined into one base.

After connecting to a server, the Bene Gesserit’s Reverand Mother greeted and ushered me into the character creator. Anybody on PC can access this part of the game thanks to the Character Creator & Benchmark Mode Demo that is available on the Dune: Awakening Steam Page. I was able to mold my character’s individual facial features and extremities to my liking. When customizing my character, I like to make it look similar to me. Then I can actually see myself in the world I am exploring.

Once you have your look, you must select your Homeworld, Caste, and a Mentor. Your Homeworld will give you a dialogue trait and a unique emote, and Caste will give you another dialogue trait. Mentor is the most important of these three. It helps you determine your starting ability and which training tree you can start putting points into from the start. For this beta, I chose the Atreides homeworld of Caladan, giving me the Atreides salute unique emote. My character, Pyrin, is from the Na-Familia, or Noble, Caste. I chose Swordsmaster as my mentor, which gave me the starting ability of the Knee Charge. The dialogue traits I earned from my selections were Nobility and Honorable.

The Surface of Arrakis

Next, you are sent to the surface of Arrakis, where your ship is promptly shot down. A mysterious man named Zantara saves you, and you awaken in a cave. This is the start of the tutorial, and you start collecting junk metal to make “improvised” tools and weapons. The crafting menu is easy to navigate, a must for a survival game such as this. Once I had my makeshift knife, I also had to make a resource harvesting tool. Every survival game, especially the sci-fi ones, usually has a unique way of doing this.

In Dune: Awakening, Arrakis is littered with scrap metal, rock, and ores all over the ground. However, for those bigger chunks, we had to craft a Cutteray. With the Cutteray, you don’t just go in like a chainsaw, but more like a scalpel. First, you have to scan the resource with it. Then there is what I would call a minigame. Each scan will reveal a highlighted path somewhere along the resource chunk. Much like a surgeon operating on a patient, you must carefully fire your Cutteray along the path. This makes resource harvesting fun but also tense, depending on the situation.

The Dangers of Arrakis

Funcom has done a great job of making sure you are always on your toes on Arrakis. The Sun itself is one of your worst enemies. Spend too much time in the sun and you start to dehydrate. You have a water bar that you must keep your eye on. Nestled in a nice HUD in the bottom left of your screen are your stamina, health, and body water levels. The higher your water levels, the higher your stamina, and it can even add bonus stamina the more it is filled. You always want to have at least one of the three sections filled. There are many ways to harvest water, including from the blood of your victims. This mechanic I do not want to spoil, as Funcom has truly done something unique in my eyes.

Building for Dummies

The best way to get out of the elements is to construct yourself a shelter. I am usually not the builder in our Survival game groups, so my buildings are the equivalent of the stick figure drawing; simple, but they do the job. For dummies like me, Dune: Awakening seems to have figured out how to make building accessible for everyone. Using a construction tool, I put together my hovel. I did not even have to figure out which side of the wall was the inside. This truly is “Building for Dummies!”

The Fabricator

Once I had my abode all set up, it needed all the bells and whistles. While there are many things your home on Arrakis will need, from generators to water purifiers, nothing fascinated me more than the Fabricator. I could spend hours crafting in this game thanks to this fun utility. Anything you can craft on your person, you can build in the fabricator. Of course, this also unlocks the ability to craft more intricate weapons, gear, and tools. You do not get access to all of these right away. The leveling and research in the game feel very akin to many other survival games, such as Conan: Exiles. Funcom is following the adage, “If it isn’t broken, why try and fix it?”

Community Potential

While I did see many other user-made buildings in my travels, I did not run into any other players during this beta, but that does not mean they were not out there. Arrakis is vast, and even though we were only given access to about 25% of the world, this small fraction of the world is quite large. You still have to always watch your back because you do not know who is lurking.

Luckily, you can set permissions on pretty much everything you build. You can set each item differently, too. If you want your guild to access your home but not your storage chests, you can do that. It is quite a great feature that will allow interesting dynamics of a community. You can also set these permissions for your vehicles.

Traversing Arrakis

On Arrakis, vehicles are very important. When crossing large stretches of desert, you want to make sure you can get away from anything from sandworms to ships at night targeting you and sending down soldiers. Vehicles are also another good way to avoid the sun. Plus, you never want to stay in one place too long.

I cannot wait to check out the other vehicles in the full game, especially the Ornithopter.

Dune: Awakening Final Reaction

There is so much more I can say about Dune: Awakening. I played roughly 20 hours of the game and only scratched the surface. The story is something that will certainly draw you in, with Zantara guiding you along as you explore ancient caves. Without giving too much away, you do get to experience Spice Dreams. Spice is going to play a big part; that much is clear. Would you expect anything less from a Dune game?

Playing late into the final night of access, my time on Arrakis left me wanting more. I cannot wait to dive deeper and have my friends join me on this exciting and daunting adventure. Dune: Awakening is already living up to the hype, and I have a feeling so will the final product. Dune: Part Two is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 3, 2023.
