Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) are two of Tim Burton’s classic DC films that brought us Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. There are so many iconic scenes, including the Joker shooting down the Batwing, Batman zipping through with his Grapple Launcher, the cats nibbling on Catwoman and Penguin biting off someone’s nose. For those who want to experience the films on the big screen again or for the first time, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group and Dolby have announced that the two films will “return” in theaters for a special one-night engagement on August 25 in Dolby Cinema.

The special Batman and Batman Returns night will be shown in Dolby Vision for vivid picture quality and Dolby Atmos for immersive sound. The films will be screened exclusively at over 160 Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres in the U.S.

Tickets are now on sale at https://dolbylabs.co/Batman and https://dolbylabs.co/BatmanReturns.

Tim Burton’s Batman took on a darker tone compared to the campy show in the ’60s starring Adam West and Burt Ward. The Joker was played by Jack Nicholson, and he was an evil and maniacal villain who gave me nightmares for that scene where he turned an enemy into a crispy corpse. Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman was simply to die for, and Danny DeVito as The Penguin was grotesque yet engaging.

With the films in Dolby Vision, expect to experience deeper blacks, sharper contrast, and more vivid colors. As for the immersive sound with Dolby Atmos, I can only imagine how the Batwing and Batmobile will sound with Danny Elfman’s score playing in the background.

“I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity,
beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting,” said filmmaker Tim Burton in a statement. “Dolby Atmos
and Vision brought it all to life in a fresh way.”

Homatics MiniBar is a compact 5.1 soundbar and 4K media player that features Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Retailing at $399, the smart home experience is made for the entry-level users. The 4K Media Player uses the Android TV OS, which allows the users to stream from their favorite apps, play music and games, and cast from devices. The 5.1 surround sound is all packed inside the mini bar, so don’t expect to be blown away if you want a really good surround sound experience. However, the sound is decent for its compact size.

The unit I received didn’t come with a Type A or B plug, so I had to get an adapter to get it to work. However, the website does offer different plug type including EU, US, and UK.

Audio

The sound of the Homatics Mini Bar does its job as a convenient smart system in the entry level. Since it only has 5.1 audio, don’t expect a really immersive Dolby Atmos experience. You’ll be able to tell when it’s using Dolby Atmos when the text scrolls on the front. For its size, it does pack all the 5.1 speakers into the sound bar and tires its best, but if you want a better 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos experience, you’re better off with other systems that have separate speakers.

We tested the audio out by first watching Dune: Part Two on HBO Max. The dialogue is clear, and the highs and mids were good; for example, the sound of the Fremen as they echo to each other in the desert valley. Next up, we tested out The Batman, and the dialogue was also clear. What about the bass? It’s nothing to write home about due to its small a size.

Video

We didn’t get to do much testing with the video quality, but we did test out Dune: Part Two and The Batman in Dolby Vision. The picture was detailed and the colors were vivid.

There are no passthrough inputs, so don’t expect to plug your Blu-ray players or consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox One Series X/S.

Final Reaction

As an entry level surround sound mini bar, it’s great for those who don’t want to break the bank and want something convenient and compact for a guest room or a spare room. However, it leaves a lot to be desired for audiophiles.

Mufasa: The Lion King continues the circle of life as the prequel and sequel to 2019’s The Lion King. It follows the adventures of Mufasa, Taka, Sarabi, and Rafiki as they search for a new home and family. Hardcore fans may be turned off by the changes to the story they know and love, but those with an open mind may get a kick out of seeing a new adventure with classic characters. Mufasa: The Lion King is an improvement over the 2019 film with an engaging story that isn’t a remake and a more emotive facial animation of the animals.

The film is set after the events of 2019’s The Lion King where Simba and Nala are now the king and queen, respectively, of Pride Rock. They now have a daughter, Kiara, who learns of the tale of how Mufasa became king by Rafiki, the wise mandrill. The story then focuses on Mufasa’s story for most of the running time with some scenes of Kiara, Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa sprinkled in to remind audiences of how the characters are all related. (And to sell merchandise.)

Mufasa described the ancestors of Simba in the 2019 and 1994 films, leading one to think that Simba came from a long line of royalty. However, Mufasa: The Lion King turns that upside down, with director Barry Jenkins embracing a new origin story for Mufasa where he was adopted by Taka’s royal family. This story resonates with the director because he’s also part of a chosen family. As a result, we get to see Mufasa having to rise to the occasion as a newcomer instead of fulfilling his duty if he were to be a prince from the beginning.

When the 2019 The Lion King came out, one of my gripes was the facial animation. The lions didn’t have a lot of expression, and it just felt like watching a nature documentary with moving mouths. In Mufasa: The Lion King, the lions are more expressive, and it’s easier to recognize their emotions, whether they are afraid, sad, happy, or angry.

The voice cast brings life to the younger versions of iconic characters including Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka (later known as Scar), and Tiffany Boone as Sarabi. Mads Mikkelsen voices Kiros, the leader of the white lions, aka “The Outsiders,” and he oozes power and fun as a villain.

Lin-Manuel Miranda serves as the songwriter for the film, adding his style to a franchise known for its music by Elton John. The musician has created incredible and memorable music in Hamilton and Moana, and although the songs in Mufasa: The Lion Kong are good, most of the songs won’t have a lasting impact where it’ll get stuck in my head (except for “Bye Bye”). Mads Mikkelsen definitely had fun singing “Bye Bye,” a fun and catchy song with a dark undertone.

I saw the film at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and it was in 3D with Dolby Vision and Atmos. The 3D wasn’t as prominent as say something like Avatar, but there were a few highlights including a waterfall sequence. Dolby Vision showcased the colorful world of The Lion King with the lively savanna environments, deep blacks with the night sky, vivid colors of the different animals and biomes, and more. Dolby Atmos is where the film shined as the roars of the lions and the thunderous sounds of a stampede felt impactful, to name a few. For Dolby Cinema locations, visit https://dolbylabs.co/Mufasa.

Final Reaction

Mufasa: The Lion King is better than 2019’s The Lion King with expressive facial animation and an engaging origin story that isn’t a remake. The film is beautiful to look at and the music is enjoyable albeit it won’t be stuck in my head in the future. In conclusion, it’s a fun watch but isn’t something that I love.

Score: 3.5/5 Atoms

The Fall Guy is a love letter to the stunt community, and it stars Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers, a stuntman who comes back into the movie industry after a hiatus from a stunt gone wrong. He gets another chance at life as he gets to work with Jody Moreno, his ex-girlfriend and the director of Metal Storm, her first feature film.

The comedy action film is in good hands thanks to director David Leitch, a former stuntman who has gone on to helm films like John Wick, Deadpool 2, and Bullet Train. We had the chance to check out the film in the Dolby Cinema format at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and it was a treat with Dolby Vision’s clear picture quality and Dolby Atmos immersive sound.

You can read our The Fall Guy film review here.

The Fall Guy’s picture quality was showcased in Dolby Vision, and the video quality was clear overall. As a film that highlights the stunt community, there were plenty of cool visuals from Colt jumping from a helicopter to fighting inside a nightclub. The nightclub scene was out of this world with Colt seeing abstract imagery due to a substance inside his body. The result was an eye-catching fight scene that showcased vibrant colors and deep blacks. There are plenty of dark scenes including Colt sneaking around at night, and it features deeper darks.

The film doesn’t have many bright scenes, even though there are several scenes in daylight. With that said, the Dolby Vision format didn’t get to show off how bright it can be.

The Dolby Atmos surround sound is superb, and it’s really good where I was able to get lost in the film. From the sound of explosions during a car stunt at the beach to an epic showdown with the stunt crew against the bad guys, it was loud and enveloped the theatre. The dialogue was clear and audible.

The Fall Guy in Dolby Cinema is a treat for the visual and audio senses with plenty of action scenes including explosions, gunfire, close-quarter combat, and car chases.

Dolby Cinema, a combination of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, is a premium theater experience, bringing vivid colors and immersive sound to the moviegoing public. Today, Dolby Laboratories announced it will be bringing its ultimate movie-going experiences to more theaters and audiences worldwide.

Of all the premium large formats (PLF) available, Dolby Cinema is the highest average per screen box office. With Dolby’s new solution, it allows theatrical exhibitors to offer both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to their guests.

“At Dolby, our passion is creating immersive entertainment experiences, and we can’t wait to bring the transformative power of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to even more theaters around the world,” said Jed Harmsen, Head of Cinema and Group Entertainment at Dolby. “Coming off of Dolby Cinema’s strongest year at the box office, we’re thrilled to provide exhibitors this new offering, which will unlock significantly greater opportunities for moviegoers around the world to love movies more in Dolby at premium theaters.”

In 1897 Oklahoma, an oil discovery brought wealth to the Osage Nation, quickly changing the lives of the Indigenous people and making them the richest people in the world per capita. With wealth came greed, and white settlers found ways to get a share of the money, leading to a series of murders of the Osage people.

Martin Scorsese directs Killers of the Flower Moon, a film based on the book of the same name following the Osage Nation murders in the 1920s. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, who settles in Osage County in search of a new job thanks to his uncle William Hale (played by Robert De Niro), known as the “King of the Osage Hills.” Ernest meets and falls for Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), a wealthy Osage, but soon their lives will be affected by the mysterious murders terrorizing the neighborhood.

Scorcese hasn’t lost his touch, and he has crafted a lengthy film that captures the horror of the murders known as the Reign of Terror. The killings are quick and brutal, and paranoia can be felt as greed infiltrates the Osage people. The film covers the beginning of the oil discovery all the way until the federal investigation and the court cases. The long-running time is warranted to cover all the grounds. Scorsese and his team have conveyed the sneaky ways the greedy white settlers will infiltrate the Osage people, and it’s a slow burn that will make you sick to your stomach as characters gaslight, steal, and cheat.

The Cast

DiCaprio and Gladstone are the leads with the former having more to do as he navigates the world of greed seeped inside Osage Nation. He plays a very flawed man, and at this pace, I’m excited to see more of his performances as despicable characters who can still be charming. Gladstone is the glue that brings all the elements together since Mollie is connected to the deaths surrounding her.

The cast includes all types of characters from the Osage people to the government officials. Jesse Plemons portrays Tom White, a BOI agent with a calm demeanor; Brendan Frasier is bombastic as W. S. Hamilton, a lawyer; Tantoo Cardinal is Lizzie Q, Mollie’s mother who has a distrust of strangers; Cara Jade Myers is Anna Brown, Mollie’s sister who likes to drink; and more. Each character has their own personality, helping the plot move along.

Dolby Cinema

The film’s $200 million budget can be seen with the filming location in Oklahoma, the set design, costumes, and more to bring the world of 1920s Osage Nation to life. I was able to catch the film in Dolby Cinema at the Dolby Theatre, and it was an engaging experience since I was very focused on the story and characters. Killers of the Flower Moon is a period film set in Oklahoma, so the colors won’t be as vibrant. There are plenty of dark scenes, and the details aren’t lost thanks to Dolby Vision. During the wedding scene with Mollie and Ernest, the details and colors on Mollie’s dress stood out, showcasing its beautiful design.

The Dolby Atmos surround sound helps enhance the movie-going experience. The film contains lots of dialogue, and it’s clear and audible. The sound is put to the test, especially during a scene involving an explosion that is loud and sudden. A stormy night scene with Mollie and Ernest at the dining table was effective with its ambiance through a window and surround sound.

Final Reaction

Killers of the Flower Moon is another feat of filmmaking from Scorsese, and Gladstone and DiCaprio have turned in superb performances, representing the two different sides. The rest of the cast is exceptional, and the cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto and the set design help to bring viewers into a dark period of time in a historical Oklahoma.

Killers of the Flower Moon releases in theaters on October 20, 2023. It will debut on Apple TV+ at a later date and will incorporate Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

For the best movie-going experience, viewers can also experience Killers of the Flower Moon at their local Dolby Cinema when it releases in theaters on Oct. 20. To find the closest Dolby Cinema near you, click here.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a highly anticipated sequel with Harrison Ford returning as the titular adventurer. Sitting on the director’s chair is James Mangold, who brought us the brutal and critically acclaimed Logan. I was able to check out Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and it delivers on the Dolby Cinema experience with roaring Dolby Atmos and wonderful Dolby Vision.

The Dolby Theatre is a Hollywood landmark that’s home to the Academy Awards and movie premieres. There are 215 powered speakers inside the theater, which is more than enough to make Dolby Atmos shine, and Dolby Vision helps to enhance the dark and light areas of the screen along with vivid colors. I knew I was in for a treat when watching Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The film’s prologue mostly takes place at night, which is a good way to show off the dark scenes in Dolby Vision. We see Indy getting chased by Nazis, and the nighttime scenes are dark while maintaining details in lighter areas. The clothing, objects and people look detailed, but sadly, the clarity in the night scenes makes the CGI for young Indy more noticeable. As a result, the de-aging outcome feels off where it’s cutting on the uncanny valley.

One of the vibrant scenes was the protest on the streets that was set during the day. The colors popped as we see a crowd marching along with confetti falling and the United States flag with its red, white, and blue. There are a couple of scenes that transition from night to day quickly, and it was very intense in a good way. One particular transition went from night to day quickly, and it was bright enough that I had to squint for a bit to adjust my eyes.

(Clockwise from right): Colonel Weber (Thomas Kretschmann) and Doctor Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Courtesy of Lucasfilm

Dolby Vision looked great, but the real star is the Dolby Atmos presentation, which had me on the edge of my seat. The most important thing for me is clear dialogue, and even with all the explosions, bullets whizzing by, and car chases, it was very audible and easy to understand. The mixing was wonderful while still being able to showcase the heavy-hitting sounds. The explosions are loud and clear, Indy’s whip gives off a sharp crackle, and the car and train engines purred. Sala, Indiana Jones’ longtime friend, punched a person really hard, and it was loud with power behind it.

There’s no denying the greatness of a John Williams score, and the composer is back with the recent iteration. The film boasts an impressive music space, especially the brass instruments making Indy sound triumphant.

Overall, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny boasts an impressive Dolby Cinema presentation with its hard-hitting Dolby Atmos audio and vivid and contrasting levels thanks to Dolby Vision. There are plenty of impressive scenes that truly showcase the premium Dolby format.
