That’s not all, the game is getting the Hollywood treatment with a Death Stranding movie. Today, Kojima Productions and A24 have announced its director and writer, Michael Sarnoski, who has helmed films such as A Quiet Place: Day One and Pig. He’s also attached to directing and writing the upcoming Death of Robin Hood.

Here’s the film’s description: “Death Stranding will delve into the mysteries surrounding the ‘Death Stranding’ – a catastrophic series of events that blurred the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead, bringing forth nightmarish creatures into a fragmented world on the brink of collapse.”

The news comes after Kojima Productions revealed a new trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach at SXSW. The sequel will be available on PlayStation 5 on June 26, 2025. For fans who want to experience the music, a concert tour will be headed worldwide.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a PlayStation 5 exclusive and brings back Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Troy Baker. They are joined by Luca Marinelli, George Miller, and Elle Fanning.

Murai (Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Station Eleven) is a renowned music video director and filmmaker, and he will be directing and producing the film with Henry Dunham serving as writer and producer.

Producing under the Square peg banner are Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, with Julia Oh, Christine D’Souza Gelb and David Hinojosa for 2AM.

Not much is known about the upcoming film, but A24 describes it as a “high-stakes action film set against the backdrop of feudal Japan.)

Murai’s credits include executive producing and directing Amazon’s Mr. and Mirs Smith, executive producing FX’s The Bear, executive producing Atlanta, directing seven episodes of Atlanta: Robbin’ Season, and directing episodes of HBO’s Barry. He also collaborated with Childish Gambino on “This Is America,” which has over 795 million views on YouTube.

Square Peg and A24 have worked together on Hereditary, Midsommar, and Dream Scenario. They were both working together on upcoming projects including Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega; Eddington, featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone; The Drama with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson; and Primetime with Robert Pattinson expected to star.

2AM has collaborated with A24 on Bodies Bodies Bodies and Past Lives. They are working on Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson and Antonio Banderas; and Celine Song’s follow-up feature Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.

“It’s much different than what we did with ‘Jungle Cruise,’ but I got to tell you there is no greater partner in our industry than Emily who I would want to have to rip this thing open,” he said. “This is a long time coming, man. It’s with A24 and we’ll shoot that next. I can’t wait.”

Early production on the film appears to have begun as The Rock shared on his personal Instagram that he has started his MMA training camp to prepare for the role.

“With WrestleMania behind me, my second training camp of 2024 begins tomorrow for my next role in a film titled The Smashing Machine,” Johnson said. “My body’s banged up from Mania, but no injuries and feeling great – ready to go. Starting my MMA workouts tomorrow. I’m coming into this in pretty good conditioning and cardio shape, but MMA is a different animal. And Mark Kerr was a ‘one of one’ monster.”

The Rock has stated this film will not shy away from the dark parts of Kerr’s life. The Smashing Machine will cover his issues with drug addiction, steroid use, and depression.

“I run to this Smashing Machine journey with deep respect and love for all MMA fighters and the culture,” he added. “Especially those who have struggled with addiction. I’ve lost so many friends (wrestlers) over the years from addiction and mental health struggles – from suicide too, it was just their time to go. This is my love letter to them.”

The Smashing Machine starring The Rock is slated for a 2025 release. The HBO documentary that shares the same name as the movie is currently available to stream on Max.

Today, movie studio A24 and video game studio Kojima Productions have announced that they will be teaming up to bring the world of Sam Porter Bridges to life. The independent movie studio’s credits include the Oscar-winning film, Everything Everywhere All At Once,

A new art has been released with the A24 logo getting the Death Stranding treatment with the letters dripping.

In a couple of days, December 16th will mark the 8th anniversary of Kojima Productions, and there’s a lot of celebration to be had. A24 and Kojima Productions are promising to deliver the mysteries of the apocalyptic event known as the “Death Stranding,” With an already impressive cast in the video game, will moviegoers get to see Reedus, Seydoux, and Baker reprise their roles in the live-action adaptation? Let’s hope so!

Hideo Kojima said: “A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together. There are a lot of “game adaptation films” out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. Kojima has been super busy since he announced during The Game Awards 2023 that Kojima Productions and filmmakers like Jordan Peele are working on another game, OD, which will bridge the gap even more between cinema and video games.

Disney+ Will Stream ‘Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds’ Documentary

This week, Kojima Productions also announced that its documentary, Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds, will be streaming exclusively on Disney+ next year. It will follow Hideo Kojima and his studio as they create the digital world of Death Stranding.
