Ameican Born Chinese is an upcoming Disney+ live-action series based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. The action comedy follows Jin Wang, a teenager dealing with love, high school, and family, and his world collides when Chinese mythological gods enter his life. During SXSW, an exclusive art poster from visual artist James Jean was revealed at the world premiere at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas.

The world premiere at SXSW had actors Ben Wang, Daniel Wu, Chin Han and Sydney Taylor, and executive producers Kelvin Yu, Gene Luen Yang and Melvin Mar in attendance. The cast and crew were celebrating the upcoming series along with the historic Oscar wins for fellow cast members Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan.

The art features Jin as he thinks about his experiences as an Asian American. Previously, Jean was hired to work on an art piece for the seven-time Academy Award-winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once, which also held its world premiere at SXSW.

Jin can be seen on his way to school with The Monkey King shapeshifting as his backpack. The flora design is inspired by Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian painter who traveled to China during the Qing dynasty and was a pioneer in combining Western techniques with traditional Chinese aesthetics.

American Born Chinese will premiere on Disney+ on May 24, 2023.
