Transformers: EarthSpark Focuses on Family and Brings New Robots into Mix

Transformers: EarthSpark is an animated series from Nickelodeon Animation Studio and Hasbro featuring the Autobots and Decepticons, and it is debuting this month on Paramount+. The war between the two Cybertronian factions is over, and a new type of Transformers has emerged called Terrans. The Maltos, a human family, has adopted the Terrans, but they’ll need to get ready for a new threat.

“The spark that got us on the journey toward Transformers: Earthspark was thinking about the projects and filmmakers that inspired us as kids like The Iron Giant, Goonies, E.T., filmmakers like Spielberg, Joe Dante, Christopher Columbus, and the list goes on and on and on,” Executive Producer Dale Malinowski tells Nerd Reactor.

With the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons over, the creative team was excited to focus on something new in the franchise.

“We were excited to explore stories with these iconic characters that are the chapter after the great war that is so important to this franchise and has been told many times over and extremely well in those shows and movies that we grew up watching and love,” Malinowski said. “So we were thrilled for the opportunity to explore what’s next. What happens when the war ends? How do their relationships evolve? Or devolve? What happens when we introduce new characters into the mix? And and how does that shake things up? These new characters – the Terrans, robots Twitch and Thrash – they’re not 100% Cybertronian. They’re not 100% Earth human either. So they’re somewhere in between. And they and Bumblebee ended up being some kind of missing link between these two factions.”

Elita-1 will be making an appearance in the series as an Autobot who is working alongside Optimus Prime. She is voiced by Cissy Jones.

“Optimus Prime is like everyone’s space dad, right?” asked Jones. “And [Elita-1] is like the cool space aunt that makes sure things get done. But she also has fun. She’s not so much of a militaristic personality that she doesn’t goof off and be silly. That’s what I love so much about her is that she’s kind of all of these wonderful things baked into a red robot.”

Zeno Robinson voices Thrash, a Terran Transformer who can transform into a motorcycle. Being born on Earth, he is in the middle area.

“I think with Thrash, it’s definitely more of a human,” Robinson said of his character. “It comes from a human core. And he’s a kid and he’s whatever the kid version, whatever the teenage version is in my head. That’s how I approached it to whatever the teenage version of a Transformer is, or a robot. That’s kind of how I sort of approached this in a very human way.”

Twitch is a Terran that can transform into a flying drone, and she is voiced by Kathreen Khavari. As a Terran, she has a connection to her human partner, Robby, the teenage boy in the Malto family.

“They can literally feel one another’s feelings,” Khavari said. “I mean, that’s compassion, right? I mean, that’s the ability we all have. The sense that when one of our loved ones isn’t happy or is in a dark place, it affects us too. So I think, in that sense, it is very relatable and it’s a little bit more obvious for them, but it’s a beautiful place to explore.”

Transformers: EarthSpark debuts on November 11, 2022, on Paramount+.
