The Creed films have starred Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies. A third film in the series is coming, and Jordan is back in one corner as Adonis, and in the other corner, he is on the director’s chair. Today, the trailer for Creed III has dropped, and it features antagonist Damian Anderson, who’s played by Jonathan Majors (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania).

Creed III marks the feature film directorial debut for Jordan, who has been growing up on set in the industry for over 20 years. He started out doing background and extra work, seeing the sets evolving and seeing the inner working of the production’s storytelling.

“I finally got to this place in my career where I wanted to tell a story and not just be in front of the camera, not just execute somebody else’s vision,” Jordan said during the trailer press conference. “And having a character that I’ve played twice before, it’s been seven, eight years living with this guy, so to be able to tell a story of where I believe Adonis is at, and also at 35 years old, I had a lot to say as a young man, as a young Black man, just my life experiences and how I could actually share that, share a piece of myself with the world – through these characters and through this story. So I just felt like it was the right time.”

The actor/director had some tips from Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), who directed the first Creed film.

Jordan said, “I was talking to Ryan Coogler back when we were doing Creed I, and he was just like, ‘It’s never the right time. You just gotta jump in the deep end and go for it.’ And he gave me a lot of encouragement. So I just felt like it was the right time.”

Jonathan Majors joins Creed III as Damian, an old friend of Adonis who recently was released from prison after 18 years.

“For me as a director, just to have that running mate and have that scene partner, it made all the difference in the world,” Jordan said. “I think he’s extremely talented. The world is finding out daily how incredible this man is in the work that he does. He is finally getting the props that are due. And Jonathan was incredible, man. He showed up every day ready, ready to go to war, ready to work.”

“And I guess it’s my first time directing that relationship between, you know, director and actor,” he continued. “I really understand that now, and it’s a bond that’ll last forever. So just really lucky to have that gentleman by my side while I’m going through this process.”
