Loungefly Creatives on Disney Fandom and Creating Niche Products

Loungefly is known for its creative mini backpacks inspired by pop culture, and it has been expanding its line to other products to create a lifestyle brand. This year has been busy with its presence at San Diego Comic-Con and recently, D23 Expo. For the latter, exclusives include the Beauty and the Beast Enchantress Mini Backpack and Big Hero Six Baymax Battle Mode Cosplay Mini Backpack.

Liz DeSilva, Loungefly’s Senior Vice President of Creative, and Derrick Baca, also the SVP of Creative, are pivotal in coming up with the many different products. They are partners in life and creative partners at work, and the duo brings different things to the table with different fandoms and ideas. Their goal is to make the best stuff for the community while having different perspectives, experiences in life, and things that they gravitate towards.

“It doesn’t leave the house,” Baca laughs. “We are Disney bounders, Dapper Dayers. This is a lifestyle that we’ve had for a number of years.”

“It oddly works,” DeSilva tells Nerd Reactor during D23 Expo. “Some people don’t understand how we can hang out with each other so much, but I like it. He’s fun!”

It’s always good to have a creative team who loves the products and the properties, and Loungefly has been delivering on that with its creative designs.

“We’ll have a conceptual idea,” Baca said. “We got the most talented designers and artists that somehow make those weird things in our head go, ‘Wow, that’s exactly what we wanted.”

“They make it better than we could even imagine,” DeSilva added. “I do a crappy sketch on a post-it and they turned it into the most amazing, innovative design. So it’s great.”

However, not all ideas become huge hits. Some ideas that they thought were going to be big don’t go as planned, and other ideas surpass their expectations. This is why they love seeing the fans at events like D23 Expo. The Disney convention is catered toward fans, and it allows Loungefly to create niche products that aren’t known to other types of fans.

“An event like D23, it allows us to get deep into the fandom,” Baca said. “Like when we do the Enchantress mini backpack. Somebody that was on screen for two seconds of a mural in Beauty and the Beast, these fans will know it.”

“These are the people that know the ins and outs of every movie,” DeSilva said.

Fans who weren’t able to attend D23 Expo 2022 can buy the mini backpacks at Loungefly.com.

Loungefly and Funko will be headed to New York Comic Con in October, and their presence will be big as they create “Frightmare on Fun Street” (Booth #1419), an immersive booth experience.
