D23 Expo: Surprises and Reveals Aplenty for Marvel Studios at D23 Studio Showcase

Fantastic Four

Matt Shakman Officially in as Director of Fantastic Four

Now, rumors have been swirling about Fantastic Four and what they would reveal at the Marvel Studios D23 presentation. One set of rumors said that they would reveal the cast and director at D23. Unfortunately, only one-half of those rumors were true. Kevin Feige announced that Matt Shakman (WandaVision) would be the director shepherding Marvel’s First Family into the MCU. Sadly, no other information was given about the future of the Fantastic Four. However, finding a director is still a step in the right direction.

Loki: Season 2

Ke Huy Quan Joins the Cast of Loki Season 2

Although Loki is in the middle of filming their new season, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have anything to show or announce at this year’s Marvel Studios D23 presentation. Today, it was announced that Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) is joining the cast in an undisclosed role. However, from the footage shown at D23, it seems as if Quan would be playing some sort of bookkeeper or quartermaster. In the footage, Loki and Mobius are visiting Quan’s character as he drops something on a desk in front of them.

Also, Loki reveals that Kang the Conqueror has taken over the TVA. In one scene, Loki uses a Time Stick to prune a wall, which reveals a golden bas relief of Kang. In addition, Ravonna (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) makes her return in the new season as well.

Armor Wars

Armor Wars is Back on the Menu, Boys

When Marvel Studios revealed the Multiverse Saga lineup at Comic-Con this year, one notable missing title was Armor Wars. The previously announced series was absent from the Phase Four to Six reveal, which led fans to believe that the series was canceled. However, Armor Wars showrunner, Yassir Lester, went to social media to quell the rumors by saying, “I promise it is still coming out.”

Now, Armor Wars is back on the menu, boys. After Don Cheadle went onstage to help announce Secret Invasion, he stayed on stage to announce Armor Wars. Feige revealed that Secret Invasion will lead directly into Armor Wars. Also, they said that the series will start filming next year and will be a six-episode series.

Other than that, no further information was given. However, with the series beginning its shoot next year, hopefully, we’ll find more information at Comic-Con next year.

Magic vs. Technology At the Heart of Ironheart

Although it was heavily rumored that the Disney+ project that Ryan Coogler was working on was a series around Okoye, it turns out that the series is actually Ironheart

The battle magic versus technology will be at the forefront of the series. This notable battle of opposing forces has always been a constant struggle in the Iron Man comics. You have Tony Stark, technological genius and billionaire (also playboy and philanthropist), and on the magic side, you have the Mandarin and his ten rings. While it’s been a constant in the comics, it’s never been explored in the MCU… Until now.

Anthony Ramos (In the Heights) is playing The Hood, a villain with a magical cloak that originates from Dormammu. On the other hand, Riri Williams is a young technological genius who loves to build, just like Tony Stark. So the battle between technology and magic will be something that I’ll fanboy over (as a huge Iron Man fan, that is).

The Marvels

Carol, Kamala, and Monica are Teleport Sisters in First Marvels Footage

To close out the Marvel Studios presentation, Kevin Feige brought the first look at The Marvels. If you’ve seen the post-credits scene of Ms. Marvel, you saw Kamala Khan get pulled into her closet, and Carol Danvers appears instead.

Well, it turns out that the entire “body swap” concept is a primary element of the storyline. The footage begins with Monica Rambeau in space looking at a space anomaly with Nick Fury looking from S.A.B.E.R. Space Station. However, once Monica comes in contact with it, she gets blasted away. The next thing we know, it’s Kamala in the spacesuit and not Monica. Of course, being the fangirl that she is, she totally geeks out over seeing Nick Fury in space.

The dynamic of Carol, Kamala, and Monica using their powers to teleport or swap locations leads to some hilarious and cool sequences.

Echo Goes Back to Her Roots

With filming for Echo complete, Marvel Studios previewed some footage of the upcoming Disney+ series. The preview brings Echo back to her hometown and features a lot of Native American imagery and Echo kicking a lot of butts. The footage ends with the return of Kingpin—who’s wearing an eye patch made of gauze bandages.

Echo stars a mostly Native American cast, with Zahn McClarnon playing Lopez’s father, William. The series also stars Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Cody Lightning and the great Graham Greene.

Captain America: New World Order

The Leader is Back in Captain America: New World Order

As we discovered at the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam “Falcon” Wilson has taken on the heavy burden of taking on the mantle of Captain America. Now, Anthony Mackie is headlining his own film as the Sentinel of Liberty in Captain America: New World Order. While details about the film are being kept under wraps, Feige did reveal some information about the film during their . First, Shira Haas has been cast as Sabra, a mutant in the comics. No word if she’ll be a mutant in the movie, but we’re crossing our fingers.

Next, Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) and Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) will return in Captain America: New World Order. Finally, Tim Blake Nelson is returning to the MCU as The Leader. Although he’s usually a Hulk villain, it’s good to see another character from The Incredible Hulk return to the MCU.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Ant-Man and the Wasp Goes Dark

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania also made an appearance at Marvel Studios presentation this year. Although the footage is similar to the footage from Comic-Con, there are some differences. First, the footage showcases more of the sponsorship opportunities Scott Lang received after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Also, we discover that Cassie Lang’s research about the quantum realm is what ultimately brings our heroes into the quantum realm.

Cassie built a device that is like a 2-way radio between our world and the quantum realm. Upon hearing that, Janet van Dyne tells Cassie to shut the device down. Shut it down quickly. Unfortunately, it was too late. They get sucked into the quantum realm.

Finally, we get to see why Kang is the new big bad after Thanos. “I’m an Avenger,” Scott Lang says. “Have I killed you before? After so many times, it all just melds together,” Kang replies. Also, he wants Scott to steal something for him—something that Cassie doesn’t want him to steal. However, this displeases Kang, and uses his powers to lift Scott and drive him against the wall. He is hurting Scott like no one has done before in all of his appearances.

Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil Begins to Be Born Again Next Year

Charlie Cox made a brief appearance on stage alongside Vincent D’Onofrio during the D23 Marvel Studios panel. The series will start filming next year, and that’s all the information they gave about the show.

Feige did, however, gave audiences a first look at Daredevil’s cameo in the upcoming episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Those worried that Marvel Studios would lighten up the character to fit the “lighthearted” brand will be glad to hear that even in a comedic show like She-Hulk Daredevil is still the same tone as the Netflix show. It’s Jennifer Walters that’s funny, not Matt Murdock.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forver

Protect Wakanda at All Costs After the Death of King T’Challa

It was heavily hinted at in the first trailer, and we got the confirmation that T’Challa, played by the irreplaceable Chadwick Boseman, will be dead in the sequel. However, writer/director Ryan Coogler has taken his death and used it to inspire the rise of those in Wakanda. In the story, Wakandans must fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers lusting for their rich reserve of vibranium in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. Of course, those countries would also include the Kingdom of Atlantis.
