D23 Expo: Disney Welcomes All Foolish Mortals to a First Look at Haunted Mansion

Haunted Mansion

Those attending the Disney and Pixar Studio Showcase on Friday got a first look at Justin Simien’s (Dear White People) adaption of the beloved Disney ride, the Haunted Mansion. This time around, Haunted Mansion will have more horror elements while providing lots of laughs to offset the scares.

In the footage, Danny DeVito provides backstory about the mansion via a voiceover. “After the fire of 1788, the mansion was discovered, fully built,” he says. “That’s when things started to get weird.” Owen Wilson, playing a priest (or exorcist) and walks around investigating the space. They’re looking for a room that’s not listed on the blueprints for the mansion. Thus, he looks at a torch lamp, grabs it, and pulls it. Unfortunately for him, it’s not a switch and pulls the light off the wall.

Ben Matthias (LaKeith Stanfield) looks at a painting and figures out that this is the entrance to the unknown room. They go down and discover that the hidden room is a seance room. Next, we get a montage of numerous Easter eggs that Haunted Mansion ride fans will recognize. These include the Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) and the Black Widow Bride. There’s no word yet on if we’ll see the Hitchhiking Ghosts in the film.

However, to close out the Haunted Mansion portion of the showcase. Simien announced that the film couldn’t be a horror movie without the horror queen herself in it. So yes, the scream queen, Jamie Lee Curtis, joins the cast as Madame Leota. The film also stars Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Dan Levy, and Winona Ryder.

“Haunted Mansion” is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.

Haunted Mansion hits theaters on March 10, 2023.
