Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island has premiered, and recently, it held a Los Angeles screening event with the cast and crew. Guests who attended were in for a treat with haunted immersive experiences from Just Fix It Productions, the team behind Creep LA.

Telci Huynh (Kayla), Luca Padovan (Leo), Chance Hurstfield (Ferris), Julian Curtis (Stanley Crane), and JT Billings (Showrunner) were all present during the LA event, and we had the chance to chat with them about Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island.

“I grew up watching Are You Afraid of the Dark,” JT Billings tells Nerd Reactor. “And so I became the showrunner for season two and was very lucky to have the opportunity to come back and do it again. I love the horror genre. I grew up watching old movies, anywhere from Nightmare on Elm Street to the Goonies. And so I always imagine this kind of show is like what would happen if Ferris Bueller skipped school and was then haunted by a boogeyman. I eat those movies up.”

The horror genre can be really dark, but Billings believes that Nickelodeon versions of Are You Afraid of the Dark? can be just as scary as mature horror films.

“Well, I actually don’t see much of a difference between horror movies that are more mature versus the Nickelodeon version of Are You Afraid of the Dark? because horror doesn’t need to be graphic necessarily,” the showrunner said. “And I think actually, the best kinds of horror are the kinds that make you think and they scare everyone of all ages. And so I think Are You Afraid of the Dark is not just for kids, it’s for everyone in a lot of interesting ways. And I think older people will be able to relate to it. And younger kids who are just trying to experience horror for the first time and get into the genre will have a safe space to do it in our show.”
