Joker Sequel Officially Happening with Todd Philips and Joaquin Phoenix Returning

Joker was a huge hit for Warner Bros and DC that grossed over $1 billion worldwide at the box office. The film conveyed a story of what would the Joker be like if he existed in a world similar to ours. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the DC villain is shocking and riveting, and director Todd Phillips has previously said that he would return to direct a sequel if Phoenix wanted to come back. Well, it looks like it’s happening since today the director posted an image of the actor reading the script.

Back in 2019 in an interview from Total Film Magazine, Phillips had this to say.

“One thing I will tell you: I would do anything with Joaquin, any day of the week. There’s nobody like him. If he was willing to do it, and if people show up to this movie, and Warners came to us and said, ‘You know what? If you guys could think of something…’ Well, I have a feeling that he and I could think of something pretty cool.”

Today, on his Instagram account, Phillips posted two images. The first features the cover of the Joker sequel’s script. It reads: Joker: Folie a Deux. Folie a Deux means two or more individuals having the same mental disorder. (Get your theories ready for what this could mean in the film!) It’s written by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips.

The second image is a black and white photo of Phoenix reading the script as he smokes a cigarette.

There’s also a date (May 18, 2022) on the bottom left. This could be the date that this version of the script was finalized.

Joker was released back in 2019 and was inspired by films like Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. The film even featured Taxi Driver‘s Robert De Niro, who was a talk show host that humiliated the titular character.

The film won the Golden Lion award at the 76th Venice International Film Festival, and it became the first R-rated film to gross over $1 billion at the box office.
