Ms. Marvel is the newest Marvel Studios series on Disney+, and it follows Kamala Khan, a Muslim Pakistani-American teenager and a superhero in New Jersey. Superpowers are cool, and there are many other reasons why Marvel characters are loved by many including their relatability. With Ms. Marvel, Kamala’s family and friends are integral to Kamala’s journey and self-discovery.

Adil El Arbi is a director and executive producer and discussed during the Ms. Marvel press conference that family is important.

“That they can see the show, fall in love with Kamala Khan, with her friends and her family,” Adil said about what he wanted people to take away from the series. “Because you know, she has superpowers, but her real powers are the love and the care from the friends and the family. So, this magnificent cast here that brought these characters to life, that’s the real main reason to watch the show. And I hope, you know, it’s gonna be their family, the same way that we all became family.”

Mohan Kapur plays Yusuf, Kamala’s father, and he talked about how even if the show features characters from different backgrounds, it’s still about a family.

“This is a story of one family, one girl,” Kapur said. “But it’s so beautiful. It’s the story of a family in a land that’s not their own, but they’ve called it their home. And that’s beautiful.”

Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan, and she talks about why she fell in love with her character.

“I think Ms. Marvel, you know, always understood fan culture on such a cellular level, and it just really elevated the storytelling in a really unique way,” she said. “You know, she’s a 16-year-old kid with super powers, fine, we’ve seen that before. But she’s also a fan of every other hero within the MCU canon. And you know, that fascination and excitement are so shared with real-life Marvel fans, so that’s why we relate to her, you know? She reacts how we would when she gets powers. And so yeah, I love that part of her, and that’s why I fell in love with her.”
