D23 was part of Star Wars Celebration 2022 at Anaheim Convention Center during the Memorial Day weekend. Two of the big events from the official Disney fan club included the Star Tours Adventures panel on Saturday and the D23 Galactic Disco Night on Thursday.

To kick off the night at Star Wars Celebration, D23 held a disco party at the House of Blues inside Anaheim Gardenwalk. Guests in attendance were encouraged to dress up, and there were many outfits inspired by the Star Wars universe including many R2-D2 and C-3PO-themed outfits. There were games, prizes, giveaways, and plenty of photo ops.

After the main entrance, there was a long ramp that led to smoke and lights with the D23 Galactic Disco signage projected on it. It’s a cool effect that makes it look like it’s floating in the middle of the air, kind of like seeing Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.

There are two games near the entrance where you can win prizes. The first game will have you guessing how many marbles are inside a jar. The winner who guesses the closest gets Loungefly’s Jar Jar Binks Mini Backpack. The second is a dice game where players will need to roll three dice and match all three.

One of the photo ops was the chance to pose or dance with a Bith from the Mos Eisley Cantina band. Others include posing with Darth Vader and stormtroopers.

DJs for the evening were Mayer Hawthorne and Mamabear. The bars were all around for those wanting libations, and each D23 guest was able to get a ticket for tacos and a gift bag. Overall, it was a night of dancing, eating, drinking, and hanging out with friends.

Star Tours Adventures Panel

D23 hosted the 35 Years of Star Tour Adventures panel with Her Universe and Star Wars actress Ashley Eckstein as the moderator. Panelists included Tony Baxter (Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Star Tours, Splash Mountain), Chris Runco (Captain RX-24 designer) and Dennis Muren (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones).

The panelists talked about the creation of Star Tours including a time when Baxter pitched the idea to Disney CEO Ron Miller. He was invited to the Disney family’s Silverado Vineyards in Napa where he met George Lucas and again pitched the concept. Lucas loved the idea of a Star Wars ride and brought Muren on board to help out.

Lucas came up with the character of Captain RX-24, aka Captain Rex, and Runco had to come up with a design. Check out a clip as the Disney Imagineer discusses the creation of Captain RX-24.

At the end of the panel, attendees were treated to the original version of Star Tours on the big screen with Captain RX-24 on the stage as our tour guide. It was the closest thing fans can get to the classic version since the one at Disneyland is the updated one.

Star Wars is a big franchise, and with Disney getting the rights to it, the theme parks in California and Florida have expanded with Star Wars lands and rides with Galaxy’s Edge, Rise of the Resistance, and Smuggler’s Run.
