Why There’s Hope for Amy Hennig’s New Star Wars Game

Amy Hennig’s list of credits includes co-writer, co-designer and director for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and head writer and creative director for the Uncharted series. When it was announced that she joined Visceral Games to work on a Star Wars game, many gamers were ecstatic about the news. The studio worked on Dead Space, and with Hennig behind the project, many were looking forward to an action-packed Star Wars game following a bunch of scoundrels. However, excitement soon turned into sadness when EA shut down Visceral Games in 2017.

Star Wars: 1313

This wasn’t the first time fans were disappointed in a canceled Star Wars project. LucasArts teased Star Wars: 1313 during E3 2012, and it wowed the audience with its presentation and impressive in-game graphics. And a year later, Disney acquired Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise and shut down LucasArts.

Amy Hennig and Star Wars… Again!

There is good news today. For instance, Skydance New Media has announced that it has partnered up with Lucasfilm Games to develop and produce a new Star Wars game. The video game studio is a division of Skydance Media helmed by Amy Hennig. With the upcoming game, the division aims to create “a richly cinematic action-adventure game featuring an original story in the legendary Star Wars galaxy.”

“I’ve often described how seeing Star Wars in 1977 essentially rewired my 12-year-old brain, shaping my creative life and future indelibly,” said Hennig, President, Skydance New Media. “I’m elated to be working with Lucasfilm Games again to tell interactive stories in this galaxy that I love.”

Lucasfilm Games on Amy Hennig

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working again with Amy. She and the Skydance New Media team have the talent and ambition to create a unique Star Wars adventure,” said Douglas Reilly, Vice President, Lucasfilm Games. “Their vision for making inviting, cinematic interactive entertainment makes this collaboration very exciting. We’re working hard with their team of experienced and talented developers, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with Star Wars fans when the time is right.”

Skydance New Media was formed by Hennig and Julian Beak in 2019 to create narrative-driven interactive entertainment. In 2021, it was announced that the studio was working with Marvel Entertainment. Moreover, the upcoming action-adventure game will feature beloved Marvel characters. The team is comprised of developers and artists with decades of AAA experience in the action-adventure genre. Furthermore, creative consultants come from film, TV, games and comics.

Skydance Media has worked on high-profile projects including the new Mission: Impossible films, The Adam Project, and Amazon’s Reacher. Its upcoming films include Top Gun: Maverick and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Additionally, it has another game studio, Skydance Interactive, with games like The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners.

A New Hope

Skydance Media is showing no signs of slowing down and Hennig is the head of Skydance New Media. As a result, there’s hope that this Star Wars game will actually become a reality. It likely won’t suffer the same fate as the canceled Star Wars games from the defunct Visceral Games and LucasArts.

In conclusion, there’s no shortage of new Star Wars games. This includes the recent release of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Fans can look forward to the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the PC and PlayStation 5. Aspyr is currently developing in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment.
