It’s a Wonderful Life (75th Anniversary Edition) – Blu-ray Review

It's a Wonderful Life (75th Anniversary)

After watching It’s a Wonderful Life again (and again every Christmas), my thoughts remain the same as when I reviewed the film in 2019. For my original thoughts on the film, click here.

It's a Wonderful Life (75th Anniversary) - Donna Reed and James Stewart

Video

It’s a Wonderful Life hits Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG-AVC with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The whites are clean and bright, and the shadows are a deep black with no loss in these areas. When it comes to the grays, they seem a tad more varied, raising depth, dimension, and textures in the process. The picture details and edge details look extremely clean and crisp too. The picture looks stunning for its age.

Special Features

It’s a Wonderful Life‘s Blu-ray disc has the following special features on Blu-ray disc:

  • Restoring a Beloved Classic
  • Secrets from the Vault: It’s a Wonderful Life
  • It’s a Wonderful Wrap Party
  • It’s a Wonderful Life (Colorized Version)

The bonus features are similar to the ones found on the Ultra HD release of the film. You can find my thoughts on these features here. However, unlike the Ultra HD release of the film, this edition comes with the colorized version of the film. Although colorizing black-and-white films isn’t quite an exact science, you get used to the awkward coloring after a while.

Extras

The 75th-anniversary set comes with beautiful packaging and ten recipe cards from Insight Editions’ “It’s a Wonderful Life: The Official Bailey Family Cookbook” with cuisine inspired by the film. For this review, I wanted to try out some of the recipes included in the set. So I decided to cook the corn muffins and the glazed holiday ham for our annual holiday friends get-together. Thankfully, for someone who can’t cook worth a damn, I found the recipes to be easy to be incredibly easy to follow. As you can see from the picture below, the end result was a rousing success.

It's a Wonderful Life (75th Anniversary)

Overall, It’s a Wonderful Life is a classic Christmas film that stands as one of the holiday’s best films. The video still looks great despite the lack of 4K, and the audio is perfect for this kind of film. Unfortunately, the bonus features still haven’t changed over the years.

Overall Rating: 4/5 atoms
