The Addams Family – 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

The Addams Family (1991)

When I reviewed the film in 2019 for the 2-movie collection, I said “The Addams Family is a fun adaptation of the classic television series. It may not be perfect by today’s standards but it’s still a film that has aged well.” As someone who has grown up with the film, this is still true to this very day. The Addams Family is a messy film, but it still provides plenty of macabre entertainment for the whole family. For my original thoughts on the film, click here.

Video

The Addams Family hits Ultra HD Blu-ray with a Dolby Vision/HDR10 transfer and a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The picture has a beautiful inky black throughout that doesn’t crush any of the fine macabre details of the Addams family home. At the same time, the brightly lit areas shine off the screen. These bright areas provide a nice contrast to all of the darkness in the film. As you can imagine, The Addams Family isn’t a particularly colorful film. Yet, the colors that do show up look bold—such as Morticia’s red lipstick or all of the blood during the kids’ play.

The picture is also super clear, which showcases a lot of the fine gothic details of the entire production. Not to mention, it also highlights the dated visual effects. For example, you can clearly see the outlines of everyone in the hurricane towards the end of the film. Depending on the scene, there’s a distinct film grain that gives the picture its filmic look. Otherwise, the grain is non-existent. Overall, this is a stellar 4K video presentation from Paramount.

Audio

The Addams Family hits Ultra HD Blu-ray with the same 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix as the Blu-ray release from 2014 and the 2-movie collection from 2019. You can find our review of the audio mix here.

Special Features

The Addams Family‘s Ultra HD Blu-ray disc has the following special features on it:

  • Filmmaker Focus: Barry Sonnenfeld on The Addams Family
  • Archival Featurette
Features Assessment

Fortunately, we get some bonus features for The Addams Family this time around—albeit not much. Filmmaker Focus is part of the continuing Paramount series of filmmaker video retrospective diaries. This edition has Barry Sonnenfeld providing so many engaging stories about the flick from the comfort of this Zoom recording. Next up, Archival Featurette is a vintage EPK-style documentary from the DVD release. It’s nice, but you’ll probably be more entertained by watching the Filmmaker Focus.

Special Features Rating: 2.5/5 atoms

Overall, The Addams Family is a messy and dated flick, but it’s still an enjoyable ride, thanks to the charm of its likable cast. The 4K presentation is fantastic, and the old audio presentation is still a great audio mix. Although we finally get some bonus features, there’s only one good feature to watch in this release.

Overall Rating: 4/5 atoms

The Addams Family hits stores on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on November 23rd.

This Blu-ray was reviewed using a retail/advance copy/unit provided by Paramount Home Entertainment.
