Haunt of Halloween Brings Terror to Mission Viejo, CA

Haunted mazes are the rage during the Halloween season, and Southern California sees its fair share of big attractions including Knott’s Scary Farm and Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. For those in the Mission Viejo area, there’s the Haunt of Halloween at Kaleidoscope, a creepy experience featuring entertainment and a spooky maze for those wanting to stay local.

Haunt of Halloween is located at Kaleidoscope, an outdoor shopping center in Mission Viejo, CA. It’s on the first floor and is nestled next to restaurants and shops. Even though it looks tiny from the outside, it’s spacious on the inside.

Outpost 13 Haunted Maze

The main attraction is the Outpost 13 Haunted Maze, and it is located indoors. For a smaller attraction, it does a good job of making you feel like you’re outside with chain-linked fences and lighting. As you walk through the maze, you’ll encounter scare actors, dead bodies, strobe lights, fog, and some creepy sets. One of my fave sets is the room with body parts lying all over wooden tables like ears, limbs, decapitated heads, and feet.

With a smaller, local attraction, we have to set our expectations lower compared to parks with a bigger budget. There were times when I encountered empty and plain corridors, some rooms with few props and furniture, and rooms with just barrels, fences, black tarp, and mesh shade tarp.

Even though there’s only one maze at Haunt of Halloween, there are other activities. These include Up Close Horror featuring horror films props from Halloween, Friday the 13th, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There are photo ops including the door from The Shining, a life-size Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas, and a life-size Michael Myers from Halloween.

One of our favorite attractions at Haunt of Halloween is the live show. We were able to see Monte Revoltra’s Shocktail Party, and it was an entertaining music act featuring cover songs with a horror twist. He is joined by his undead assistant Ms. Muerte and undead pianist. Other shows include The Magic of Rodney Reyes Live, Freakshow Deluxe, Thriller Workshop, and Mad Science. You can check out the schedule here.
