Anime Classic Ghost in the Shell Coming to IMAX Screens

Ghost in the Shell is a sci-fi anime classic that has inspired films like The Matrix and The Terminator and games like Fear Effect. Based on the manga by Masamune Shirow, the neo-noir cyberpunk film was released in 1995 and has helped spawn the Ghost in the Shell video games, multiple anime series, a sequel, and even a live-action film starring Scarlett Johansson. Soon, fans will get to see the anime film on the big screen again thanks to IMAX and Lionsgate. Tickets are now on sale, and they will be available exclusively to IMAX screens for the first time ever on September 17, 2021. Advance previews will be shown on September 16 in select theaters. Another first includes IMAX’s first simultaneous release in Japanese, U.S. and select IMAX screens.

The film has been remastered in 4K and has gone through IMAX’s DMR (Digital Remastering) process for its screens. The film is distributed by Bandai (Japan) and Lionsgate (North America and Select International) for IMAX screens.

About Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell is set in 2029 Japan and follows Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg security guard who hunts a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master.

The film is directed by Mamoru Oshii with cinematography by Hisao Shirai.
