The Mandalorian Chapter 2: The Child is short but sweet (review)

Disney+ launched this past Tuesday, and it included the first episode of The Mandalorian from series creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni. New episodes will be released on Fridays, and the recent episode, “The Child”, has Mando on a mission to leave the planet. The second episode is shorter than expected with a running time of 30 minutes, but it’s wonderful to see Jawas making an appearance along with a new revelation from Mando’s bounty.

In the first episode, The Mandalorian teamed up with an IG droid bounty hunter in order to capture their bounty. As it turns out, the target is a 50-year-old baby who’s definitely part of the same species as Yoda. This particular alien species can live longer than humans, and Yoda died when he was 900 years old. What’s interesting is that Mando has taken a liking to the baby, as we can see from his hand gesture at the end of the episode. A future episode may reveal more about his past and why he decided to prevent the IG bounty hunter from killing the child.

With the second episode, Mando and the child are headed back to the ship, only to be attacked by Reptile marauders. To make things worse, the ship has been stripped for parts by the Jawas. To get back his parts, Mando will need to offer the Jawas something good for trading.

“The Child” has a very short running time of around 30 minutes. It may be disappointing to fans if they were expecting the episode to last longer. The bulk of the episode features Mando kicking some ass… and then getting his ass kicked many times, whether from a giant beast or from the Jawas. The Jawas are seen as resilient and tough, and it’s nice to see how they defend themselves against attackers.

There’s plenty of humor in the episode, and the conversation between Mando and the Jawas were definitely the highlight. Once again, the Lucasfilm team was able to capture the feeling of the original Star Wars trilogy, from the looks of the desert planet to the giant creature lurking in the cave.

Final Reaction

The Mandalorian Chapter 2 “The Child” is back with more nostalgia as our protagonist goes up against Jawas. There’s a lot of fun to be had in the episode, but its short running time can leave a lot to be desired.

Score: 3.5/5 Atoms
