The Mandalorian is the highly anticipated live-action Star Wars series from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, and the first episode is now available for streaming on Disney+. It follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter on a mission to capture a new target, and it’s off to a great start with its planet-hopping adventure, delightful alien characters, and the mysterious warrior.

Chapter 1 is directed by Filoni and written by Favreau, and together they have captured the look of the original trilogy while giving us an entirely new and promising story. From alien creatures to the sets, it feels like Lucasfilm from the late ’70s and early ’80s. Fans will get a kick out of seeing familiar species throughout the episode including Kowakian monkey-lizards.

The special effects are impressive for a series, with the flying ships looking realistic, and the puppetry and computer graphics making the alien creatures come to life. An IG bounty hunting android makes an appearance, and he’s definitely going to be a fan-favorite character with his dry robotic humor and his deadly accuracy.

There are many films and shows featuring masked heroes, and filmmakers love to show off the actor’s face to convey emotions. For example, Sam Raimi would try to find ways to make Peter Parker take off his mask any chance he gets. In the first episode of The Mandalorians, our protagonist has his helmet on for the whole time. You still get a sense of his personality through his voice and actions, and there are bits of flashback scenes sprinkled here and there. As the show goes on, audiences will most likely get to see more of his history.

Final Reaction

The show looks to be influenced by Westerns and the Japanese manga, Lone Wolf and Cub, and that’s not too dissimilar to George Lucas’ inspiration of mixing elements from his favorite Western and Japanese films into a sci-fi fantasy franchise. The Mandalorian is able to capture the magic of Star Wars in its first episode with fun alien creatures, a mysterious bounty hunter, and fantastical landscapes. Let’s hope Favreau, Filoni, and the Lucasfilm team can continue to deliver a riveting story with more interesting characters and beautiful sceneries.

Score: 4/5 Atoms
