Dwayne Johnson confirms Black Adam production to begin July 2020

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was cast to play Black Adam since 2008. It’s 2019, and we still haven’t had a live-action movie featuring the DC anti-hero. Over 10 years later, we finally have news that the Black Adam movie is finally moving forward. The actor has made the announcement that production will begin in July 2020.

“Very cool man, thank you,” Johnson tweeted as he complimented a sculptor. “Amazing detail. This project has been with me for over 10yrs. Production begins this July. Appreciate the support.”

Black Adam is a rival for Shazam, a boy who can become an adult superhero by shouting out “Shazam!” With the Shazam film starring Zachary Levi becoming a hit for DC, it looks like Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have decided to speed things up.

With Black Adam beginning principal photography in July of 2020, it’s likely that moviegoers will get to see the film in theaters in 2021.

The team behind Black Adam has worked on projects featuring Johnson. Jaume Collet-Serra, who is attached as the director, has worked with the actor before with Disney’s upcoming film, Jungle Cruise. Adam Sztykiel is the screenwriter, and he has worked on Rampage, a film starring Johnson.

Black Adam once appeared as a villain who was created by Otto Binder and C. C. Beck under Fawcett Comics. He has since become an anti-hero and a rival to Shazam and the Marvel Family in DC Comics.

It should be interesting to see whether fans will get to see Shazam make an appearance in the Black Adam film. Let’s hope we do see Dwayne Johnson go up against Zachary Levi.

For now, DC fans can watch Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix in theaters, with Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and Wonder Woman 1984 coming out in 2020 and The Suicide Squad in 2021.
