Simu Liu found out a week before his San Diego Comic-Con 2019 appearance that he was chosen to play Shang-Chi. The Asian Marvel superhero is getting his own Marvel Studios film, and he’ll be starring opposite Tony Leung, a legend in Hong Kong cinema. Liu has shown his excitement for being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his recent post adds to his dedication of continuing the legacy.

Simu Liu has taken to Instagram to post a photo of himself wielding Captain America’s shield. For an actor who likes to make references to the MCU in his interviews, it seems fitting. He definitely knows the weight of the films and the characters.

“As I tighten my grip on the shield I suddenly understand the weight that its owner bore for ten years,”Liu posted. “Nobody will ever be able to replace him… but I will help keep his legacy alive. I won’t let you down, Cap.”

Other actors including one in the MCU responded to his post like Randall Park (Ant-Man and the Wasp) and Mike Moh (Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood).

The actor has been eyeing the role of Shang-Chi for a while. There was a tweet from years back where he was Marvel Studios about Shang-Chi.

Fans of Liu can watch him currently as Jung in Kim’s Convenience, a popular Canadian show.

Shang-Chi in the comics has been trained to become a fighter, and when it was revealed that his father, Fu Manchu, wanted to rule the world, he had to step in to stop the madman. However, he most likely won’t be making an appearance due to his controversial nature. In the movie, Leung is set to play the Mandarin. Marvel Studios might make him the father of Shang-Chi.

The movie will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton with a script by David Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Jean-Claude Van Johnson). It also stars Awkwafina.
