Crazy Rich Asians’ Henry Golding in talks for Snake Eyes, the G.I. Joe spinoff

Snake Eyes Henry Golding

G.I. Joe is a popular franchise with a toy line from Hasbro, comics, and live-action movies and cartoons. A spinoff movie is in the works starring Snake Eyes, and it’ll be directed by Robert Schwentke (RED, R.I.P.D.). Paramount Pictures has hopes to create a bigger world in the G.I. Joe universe., and now it looks like we might have our actor to play the ninja clad in black.

Henry Golding, who starred opposite Constance Wu (ABC’s Fresh off the Boat) in Crazy Rich Asians, is in talks to star as Snake Eyes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Snake Eyes is a popular G.I. Joe character thanks to his design, mysterious nature, and being a ninja. Not much is known about him including his name and origin. What people do know about him is that he’s a formidable fighter and is always at odds with Storm Shadow. The two were once close, and it should be interesting to see if the rivalry will be shown in the upcoming spinoff.

Snake Eyes is so secretive about his identity that he isn’t the talkative type and he covers his face with a mask. But with Henry Golding attached, this may change.  Ray Park played Snake Eyes in the previous live-action movies, and it made sense to conceal his identity since Park is known for his stunts. (His face was covered in makeup in X-Men and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, after all.)

The film is written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, and it’s reported that it will be a revenge story where Snake Eyes seeks to avenge his father’s death by joining a ninja clan. Could this be Storm Shadow’s Arashikage ninja clan? If that’s the case, will Lee Byung-hun reprise his role? We’ll find out soon enough.
