Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to create new Netflix films and series
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have received a lot of flak for their handling of the final two seasons of Game of Thrones on HBO. Without a book from George R. R. Martin to adapt, critics felt that the show’s quality took a dive. The duo is currently working on a new Star Wars project for Lucasfilm, and now they are heading over to Netflix to develop new films and series.
Benioff and Weiss signed a deal to create new films and series for the streaming service, which was announced by Netflix. Before the deal was signed, Benioff and Weiss were meeting with other studios during wrapping of the final season of Game of Thrones. Companies included HBO/WarnerMedia, Disney, Comcast, Amazon and Apple. Last month, it dwindled down to Netflix, Amazon and Disney/FX.

With the new deal, it looks like the Confederate show on HBO isn’t going to happen. The show’s production was delayed, but it was already sparking controversy over its alternate historical take where the Confederates won the American Civil War.
“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”
“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home,” said David Benioff & Dan Weiss. “Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”
