New Line Cinema is working on rebooting the Mortal Kombat movie, and it has James Wan attached as the producer under his Atomic Monster banner. Now it’s being reported that the film has found one of its actors, Joe Taslim, and he’ll be playing the coolest Kombatant in the franchise, Sub-Zero.

THR reports that Joe Taslim has signed on to portray Sub-Zero, the Chinese warrior from the Lin Kuei clan. The character has been at odds with Scorpion, the popular Mortal Kombat character who is hellbent on revenge for the death of his family.

Joe Taslim had a prominent role in The Raid, a film by Gareth Evans that raised the bar for action films. He was also featured in Warrior, the new series by Cinemax that is inspired by Bruce Lee’s writings, and it has been renewed for a second season.

Not much is known about the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, but it should be interesting to see if it’ll focus more on the two deadly enemies. The 1995 film from director Paul W.S. Anderson focused on heroes Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage as they fight for Earthrealm against Shang Tsung and his fighters.

The upcoming Mortal Kombat film will mark the directorial feature debut for Simon McQuoid, a commercial director. Wan is joined by Todd Garner, Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins as producers.

Principal photography is set to begin later in the year in South Australia.
