Shawn Ashmore on new horror game, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

Supermassive Games is the developer behind Until Dawn, a narrative-horror game where anyone can die. It featured a lot of known actors as they perform motion capture including Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Brett Dalton (Agents of SHIELD), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), and Peter Stormare (John Wick: Chapter 2). The team is back again with another spine-chilling game, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan. (Yes, it’s a long title.) The upcoming anthology horror series will follow in the same footsteps as Until Dawn where any character can die while also using known actors for the voices and motion capture. Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment America has released a new developer diary with the game’s actor, Shawn Ashmore (X-Men 2, Quantum Break), talking about what people can expect from the game.

Part 1 of the developer diary video gives viewers a look at how the team brought the world of The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan to life. Shawn Ashmore plays Conrad, and he talks about the game’s characters and the motion-capture process.

I was able to play a demo of Man of Medan during E3 2019, and it was an intense session. A lot of my characters died on my watch during my first playthrough of Until Dawn, so I knew that I had to stay vigilant to make sure the characters in Man of Medan didn’t die. The playable characters are Conrad, Julia, Alex, Brad, and Fliss, and they are held captive by pirates inside a boat.

As a fan of Ashmore, I wanted to make sure his character, Conrad, wasn’t going to end up swimming with the fishes. He was given a choice to escape and call for aid, and I was able to find a smaller boat on the side to do just that. There are some quick time events that require the player to be fast with their fingers, and if you fail, your character can die. With the pressure on, I tried to get Conrad to safety. I successfully inputted the buttons popping up on the screen. But once I was away from the pirates on my small boat, another quick time event popped up, and I missed the buttons. Poor Conrad ended up getting shot by a pirate. The game continues on, but a part of me felt like I let Ashmore down by allowing him to be killed so early in the game, even if his character is somewhat of an asshole.

In Until Dawn, Peter Stormare played the role of the narrator. In Man of Medan, Pip Torrens (The Crown, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will be playing the Curator, and he will be a consistent character in The Dark Pictures Anthology games.

If you pre-order the game, you can get the Day 1 access to the Curator’s Cut of Man of Medan. This version has different options and a path with a new perspective and will show up once you’ve beaten the game. Here are the features:

  • A new perspective from different characters is unlocked.
  • New options and choices are offered within each scene that requires player choice; new decisions means new outcomes to discover.
  • New scenes and secrets not featured in the original playthrough are also unlocked.
  • Note: The contents of the Curator’s Cut will be made available to players who do not preorder Man of Medan at a later date.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan will be available on August 30, 2019, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam for PC.
