Square Enix is prepping for the release of the Final Fantasy VII Remake next year, but there’s more news in the world of Final Fantasy. Sony Pictures Television is teaming up with Hivemind, the production company behind Amazon’s The Expanse and Netflix’s upcoming The Witcher, to produce a live-action Final Fantasy series. It will be an all-new original story set in the world of Eorzea, based on the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV.

The live-action series will be inspired by the world and characters of Final Fantasy XIV and will explore the struggle between magic and technology and the quest for peace. Fans can expect to see magitek, beastmen, airships, chocobos, and new and old faces. Yes, that means we’ll finally get to see the debut of a live-action Cid, a popular Final Fantasy character who has appeared in many of the games.

“FINAL FANTASY XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into FINAL FANTASY for longtime fans and newcomers alike,” said Sony Pictures Television Co-President Chris Parnell. “This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it’s an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea’s iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favorites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience.”

“Television is the ideal medium to capture the extraordinary depth, sophisticated themes, and unparalleled imagination of FINAL FANTASY and its multitude of unique and fully realized characters,” said Jason Brown, Hivemind Co-Founder and Co-President. “We are working tirelessly to bring together artists from around the world who are united in honoring the extraordinary legacy of this franchise and its millions of fans around the world.”

Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, and Dinesh Shamdasani of Hivemind will be the series’ executive producers. Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton (Winter’s Knight, The Wells Initiative) are attached as the writers and will also be serving as executive producers.

Final Fantasy XIV debuted in 2013 and has garnered over millions of players around the world.
