Margot Robbie says Harley Quinn’s Birds of Prey outfits are ‘less male gaze–y’

Warner Bros. is going edgy for its upcoming Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) with an R-rating. But even though it’s going to be more adult-oriented, that doesn’t mean we’ll see revealing outfits for Harley Quinn as we did in Suicide Squad.

Vogue had the chance to check out the set of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and Robbie talked about the differences in her outfits compared to the previous film. She was joined by the film’s costume designer.

“That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer,” said Erin Benach, the movie’s costume designer.

Robbie added: “Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y.”

Birds of Prey is based on the comics featuring the female heroes of Gotham like Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk. The film is being directed by Cathy Yan and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Chris Messina as Victor Zsaz and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) hits theaters on February 7, 2020. The standalone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix hits theaters on October 4, 2019.
