Warner Bros. has been embracing its DC properties, especially with movies like Aquaman and Wonder Woman making a lot of money at the box office. These films have been doing a better job at making the studio money that it has decided to focus less on a shared universe. Fans will get to see all sorts of DC films including The Joker and Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). With Birds of Prey, we have Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn, revealing that the film will be rated R.

Vogue was invited to the set of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and Robbie revealed some juicy information including the film being R-rated.

“I think there’s a perception that a PG female-led action film is kind of considered a chick flick,” Robbie tells Vogue. With movies like Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel being PG-13, it allowed a lot of young female fans to connect with the superheroes. Warner Bros and the filmmakers definitely have something else in mind.

The film’s budget is definitely low compared to other DC films with $75 million. Aquaman has an estimated $160 million production budget, with Wonder Woman having $149 million. This is also less than Shazam!’s $100 million. We can definitely expect a smaller film with a more personal stake. Then again, the heroes in Birds of Prey don’t have superpowers.

The film will also have less revealing outfits.

“That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer,” said Erin Benach, the movie’s costume designer.

Robbie added: “Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y.”

With Warner Bros. dropping out of San Diego Comic-Con this year, it should be interesting to see how the studio will drum up excitement for its upcoming releases.

Birds of Prey is based on the comics featuring the female heroes of Gotham like Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk. The film is being directed by Cathy Yan and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Chris Messina as Victor Zsaz and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) hits theaters on February 7, 2020. The standalone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix hits theaters on October 4, 2019.
