Sonic the Hedgehog director to change main character’s design after criticism

Sonic the Hedgehog publicity still

Paramount Pictures

Leaked photos of Sonic the Hedgehog had a lot of fans rolling their eyes at the character design of the titular hero. This led to a lot of memes being created that poked fun of the blue hedgehog. The trailer was released this week, and this didn’t help change the minds of fans. Director Jeff Fowler has acknowledged the criticism, and he has taken to Twitter to let fans know that the design will change.

There have been cartoony characters translated to the big screen including Scooby Doo, Casper and Garfield. Another example is Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, an upcoming video game movie starring Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu, and fans have been showing support. The live-action film will take many beloved Pokemon and translate them in the live-action realm, with lots of positive reactions from early screenings including yours truly. Sonic the Hedgehog is another video game property to be adapted for the big screen, and it’s receiving the opposite reaction thanks to the new trailer.

“Thank you for the support. And the criticism,” Jeff Fowler said via his Twitter. “The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast”

Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to theaters this year, so it will be fascinating to see if the filmmakers and the CGI team will be able to pull off a miracle by then.

Synopsis: Sonic the Hedgehog follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.

The film is directed by Jeff Fowler (Gopher Broke) and written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller and Oren Uziel from a story by Van Robichaux and Evan Susser. It’s based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game by Sega and stars Jim Carrey as Doctor Eggman, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Dr. Annie Wachowski, Neal McDonough as Major Bennington and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theaters on November 8, 2019.
