New red-band Hellboy trailer is more epic than the first

Hellboy trailer

When the first trailer for the Hellboy reboot came out, it was met with criticism. There were plenty of fans who were disappointed at the tone of the film since it’s starting to look more like a comedy. The filmmakers have said that they’re aiming to make the upcoming movie rated R, and in the new red-band trailer, it’s looking to deliver on that.

The trailer is out, and it feels like an entirely different film from what we’ve seen from the previous trailer. There are big epic sequences with creatures of all types wreaking havoc on the world including giant creatures destroying everything in their paths. Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio can be seen transforming into a jaguar-like creature, Hellboy flies on a dragon-like demon creature, and Milla Jovovich’s evil character is causing a lot of grief for the main characters. A cover of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” is played in the background for more of a dramatic effect.

Synopsis: The film follows Hellboy, who must defeat Nimue, Merlin’s consort and the Blood Queen. But their battle will bring about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to turn away.

Neil Marshall is the director for the Hellboy reboot, and it stars David Harbour (Netflix’s Stranger Things) as Hellboy, Ian McShane (American Gods) as Professor Broom, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) as Nimue the Blood Queen, Sasha Lane (American Honey) as Alice Monaghan, Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) as Ben Daimio, Penelope Mitchell (The Vampire Diaries) as Ganeida, and Thomas Haden Church (George of the Jungle) as Lobster Johnson.

Hellboy is based on the comics by Mike Mignola that follows the titular character and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) as they take down occult threats. It has spawned two animated films that aired on Cartoon Network and two other live-action movies from director Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Blade 2, Devil’s Backbone) starring Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy) as Hellboy. Del Toro even partnered with Konami for a 2008 video game based on his films. Injustice 2, the fighting game that pits DC superheroes against one another, even allows players to pick Hellboy if they have the Fighter Pack 2.

Hellboy hits theaters on April 12, 2019.
