Kevin Smith replies to Bill Maher trash talking the comic book community

Bill Maher has been vocal about his dislike of the comic book culture to the point where he used Stan Lee’s death as a platform to put the fans on blast. Of course, that had the community fuming.

“I am agnostic on Stan Lee,” Maher said. “I don’t read comic books. I didn’t even read them when I was a child. What I was saying is, a culture that thinks that comic books and comic book movies are profound meditations on the human condition is a dumb ****ing culture.”

Over the weekend on his HBO show, Real Time, he continued to belittle the community and men dressing like kids.

“You can, if you want, like the exact same things you liked when you were 10, but if you do, you need to grow up,” said Maher. “That was the point of my blog. I’m not glad Stan Lee is dead, I’m sad you’re alive.”

“Director Kevin Smith accused me of ‘taking a shot when no shots are f**kin’ necessary,’ except again my shot wasn’t at Stan Lee,” Maher continued. “It was at, you know, grown men who still dress like kids.”

Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld has responded via Twitter by recommending Maher comic books to read.

“Hey Bill Maher appreciate your point of view,” said Liefeld. “I’d like to suggest comics written by Alan Moore or Frank Miller. The writing and storytelling is outstanding. Watchmen, Swamp Thing, Dark Knight Returns and any Frank Miller Daredevil are gold standards of illustrated literature.”

When Maher mentioned the part about grown men still dressing up as kids, a photo of Kevin Smith was used to make fun of the community. Smith replied to the segment via his Twitter.

“Yes, @billmaher took a shot at me during his show last night, in the midst of his latest rant about @TheRealStanLee and adults who like comic books. No, I’m not mad at all. Bill may talk tough but he’s a stoner like me and a real pussycat when confronted.”

He shared an accompanying video that was titled, “Why Kevin Smith wanted to slap Bill Maher,” where Smith said that he wanted to smack Maher with his dick.

Meanwhile, comic book movies have been huge blockbusters at the box office. Aquaman just recently beat out The Dark Knight Rises to become the #1 DC movie of all time at the box office worldwide. Four of the top ten box office films of all time are comic book movies:  Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel’s The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther.
