It was announced that The CW’s Supergirl was going to introduce the first transgender superhero on television during its panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Her name is Dreamer, and she’ll be making her debut as a superhero on February 17th in the episode titled “Menagerie.” A new photo has been released showing off Dreamer and her costume.

The superhero’s real identity, Nia Nal, has already been introduced in the show’s fourth season premiere. She revealed that she’s transgender in Season 4 Episode 2 titled “Fallout.” The pre-cognitive superhero is played by 21-year-old transgender actress Nicoles Maines.

In the January 27th episode titled “Blood Memories,” viewers will get to learn about the origin of Nia’s powers, her family and her hometown. There will also be a tease of the costume. We’ll have to wait until the “Menagerie” on February 17th to see Nia as Dreamer complete with her costume.

Showrunners Jessica Queller talks about how Nia’s hometown is a stark contrast to National City’s hatred of aliens.

“One thing that we’re excited about is going to the town where [Nia] was raised, and we’re going to see that it’s a very sort of liberal oasis,” Queller tells EW. “It’s a small town that’s always been very welcoming of aliens and where aliens and humans live in harmony. In fact, one of her parents is human and one is alien. Going home and seeing those dynamics and seeing a place [like that] will be a little break from all of the intense hatred and politics that we’ve been experiencing in National City. Then, we’ll focus on the family dynamics and what exactly has been holding Nia back from owning herself as Dreamer.”

Maines reveals how important it is for her to play the first transgender superhero on TV.

“I hope they feel validated, especially trans folks. I hope they feel that sense of, ‘Oh my gosh…'” Maines tells EW. “That’s when it’ll really sink that we have a trans superhero. I mean, it’s so important and I can’t wait.”

A new photo has also been released of Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor, and he’ll be making his first appearance on the 14th episode of Supergirl Season 4 titled “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?”

Season 4 has touched on the subject of alien hatred, and the show tackles what it’s like to be hated by people based on where you’re from.

Supergirl airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
