It’s big news today with the announcement from Netflix that Henry Cavill will be playing Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series. It’s based on the books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski about a monster hunter with special abilities set in a fantasy world. The books spawned a popular video game franchise that was developed by CD Projekt Red, which is now working on creating Cyberpunk 2077. As for the Netflix show, it will have eight episodes with Lauren S. Hissrich (Daredevil, The Defenders) as the showrunner.

Hissrich had nice things to say about the casting of Cavill as Geralt via her Twitter:

“He was my first meeting. I didn’t have writers or scripts yet – just a greenlight and a lot of passion. That was four months ago, and I’ve never forgotten the passion he brought. He IS Geralt. He always has been. I’m so thrilled to welcome HENRY CAVILL to the #Witcher family.”

Synopsis: “The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.”

Hissrich will be joined by Alik Sakharov (House of Cards, Game of Thrones) as an executive producer, who will be directing four episodes, including the pilot.

Cavill has mentioned before that he’s a fan of The Witcher 3 and wants to play Geralt. “The Witcher 3 – I just replayed all the way through,” Cavill tells IGN. “Love that game. Really good game.”

When asked if he wanted to play Geralt, Cavill said, “Absolutely.” He continued, “The books are amazing… I started reading, and they are well worth a read.”
