Snapped: The Aftermath of the Thanos Subreddit

The website Reddit is a magical place. For starters, its subreddits cover a wide variety of topics providing something for everyone. Then Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters giving birth to a new subreddit r/thanosdidnothingwrong. Similarly to most subreddits it is a place full of memes and discussions. In fact the reason for the subreddit’s rise in popularity is due to one discussion in particular: balance.

Spoilers for AvengersInfinity War ahead.

It All Started with Thanos

Inspired by Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War, users began contemplating replicating this balance. Being the latest entry in the Avengers series, the movie focuses on Thanos and his quest to obtain all the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe. Incredibly he wins and succeeds. From this victory, the Thanos subreddit was born.

A few weeks ago, the subreddit explored banning half the subreddit for the sake of balance. With the decision agreed upon, members began patiently waiting for the “snap” to come.

Wow you guys are serious about this banning thing huh? from r/thanosdidnothingwrong

It’s been days since the snap and r/thanosdidnothingwrong is still going strong with 573,000 subscribers. When the banning first began, the subreddit had around 700,000 subscribers. This should lead to there being around 350,000 subscribers left, however people have continued to join the subreddit. Following the rules of the ban, those members moved to r/intothesoulstone. Participants of the subreddit balancing received badges as well to commemorate the event.

Yet after this r/thanosdidnothingwrong feels different. There’s something eerie about entering a subreddit where half of its population has been removed. It somewhat echoes the ending of Infinity War. Even the posts have made a markable shift. Memes obviously focused more on the fact that half the subreddit is gone, but there’s a larger feeling of community. The loss of half of the subreddit is palpable.

What Comes Next?

Most members of the community expect that after Avengers 4, characters who died will return to life. While Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have made confirmations on this, fans remain hopeful. To what comes in the future, the only clue that remains is the ominous title card at the end of the movie.
