‘Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero’ is coming to Blu-ray

There are few things in this world that can really stoke the nostalgic ’90s vibes: Saturday morning cartoons, after school cartoons and pretty everything that came out on Nickelodeon (I saw a lot of TV growing up). One staple of the afternoon lineup, however, epitomized the very heart of every DC comic book nerd growing up: Batman: The Animated Series. This show brought to life the brooding character that many of us had either seen on film or in older series from TV.

The cartoons brought the life of Gotham and its super hero to the small screen, and brought great additions to the franchise, such as Harley Quinn and the King of cold, Mr. Freeze. Over time, the Dark Knight has made a few animated films that stemmed from the series, giving fans a deeper look at the crime in Gotham longer than 22-minutes. Each one was so incredible and done masterfully well, and it looks like we’re going to see one make its way to Blu-ray soon!

Announced today, the Warner Archive Collection will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero with a remastered Blu-ray release of the award-winning animated film. Directed by Boyd Kirkland, the film unveils the story of Batman faces his coolest case ever when Mr. Freeze returns to Gotham City and kidnaps Batgirl. While unraveling the mystery of Batgirl’s disappearance, Batman and Robin discover that she is part of Mr. Freeze’s frigid plan to save his dying wife – no matter what the cost. With time running out, Batman and Robin must find Gotham’s most cold-blooded villain and prevent him from putting Batgirl “on ice” forever.

Another bonus piece of news about the announcement of the Blu-ray is that the Warner Archive Collection will host an hour-long panel at WonderCon on Friday, March 23 at 1:00pm in Room 300B. Warner Archive Podcast hosts D.W. and Matthew Patterson and some surprise guests will show remastered footage and discuss
the film and the evolution of Mr. Freeze from a goofy villain into an endearing multi-dimensional character who just wants to find a cure for his dying wife.

Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero will be available on Blu-ray March 27.
