Blossom Detective Holmes: The Animated Mini-Series (Kickstarter)

Animation director Steve Ahn, who worked on the recent Voltron animation and operated as the storyboard artist for Guardians of the Galaxy (also Legend of Korra, Ben 10, The Cleveland Show, etc), launched his own production: Blossom Detective Holmes.

Its first story, “Selfie With A Strange Intruder”, begins with two detectives: Skylar Holmes and Jamie. Set in Stockholm, Sweden, the pair is chasing a suspect through the streets until they hear an unexpected gunshot. A crime scene forms, and Skylar and Jamie are on the case!

Steve offered his mission with this project:

“My next adventure is to create an animated series that has not yet been introduced into America’s predominant animation media, a crime mystery thriller with a twist on suspenseful and mature themes. So I decided to step out of the mainstream media to begin a completely new venture: independent filmmaking. I put together a small team of several good friends, who have industry experience from studios such as Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, Ghibli and more, to create the first episode of Blossom Detective Holmes: Selfie With A Strange Intruder. After long hard hours, the pilot is now complete and is waiting to make its debut.”

In one of the live Q&As with Steve, he mentioned his earlier influences from anime, particularly those created by GAINAX (Gurren Lagann, FLCL, Neon Genesis Evangelion). And this is reflective of his chosen style for the mini-series. Having his start in the animation industry at Animax Entertainment, one of the smaller animation studios in Van Nuys, California, Steve’s career grew to working with various big studios, Dreamworks being one of the more recent ones.

The project is highly influenced by Steve’s journeys, with trips to the London Olympics, Sweden, Visby, Stockholm, coupled with a love for Sherlock Holmes and the original French stories of Arsène Lupin. The pilot episode, the proof of concept for Steve’s vision can be found here:
