‘Blade Runner 2049’ prequel short introduces us to Niander Wallace

Blade Runner 2049 - Jared Leto

Denis Villeneuve has the unenviable task of creating a sequel to Ridley Scott’s beloved sci-fi classic, Blade Runner. Not only does he have to weave a brand new story, but he has to explain what happened in the thirty years after the events of the first film. As a result, Villeneuve brought together three filmmakers to create three ambitious shorts. In fact, these shorts bridges that gap between the two films.

Collider debuted first of these shorts, entitled “2036: Nexus Dawn”. Until now, we’ve only seen bits and pieces of Jared Leto’s character. However, this short gives us more information about Leto’s character: Niander Wallace. Ridley Scott’s son, Luke Scott (Morgan) directed the first short film. As the title suggests, the film is set in 2036, halfway between the first film and 2049. Check out the short below!

As we find out in the short, the creation of replicants has been illegal since 2023. Wallace is attempting to repeal this law so he can mass produce his “perfect” replicant models. However, Wallace’s creation hints at a much larger selection of machines. All of them capable of taking up arms should their owners demand it.

Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Jared Leto and Robin Wright. The film also stars Dave Bautista, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, and Lennie James.

Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049 hits theaters on October 6th.
