Uncharted director explains decision to make origin story

Will an Uncharted movie ever be released? The movie’s been in development hell for years and even had Mark Wahlberg attached for a while, but it seems like it’s gaining traction with Shawn Levy set to direct the film. It’s a wise decision to produce a movie like this considering the popularity of the video game series, but some of the early choices are a bit surprising.

For example, instead of getting right into the action with a thirtysomething Nathan Drake, the Uncharted movie will be an origin story featuring a younger version of the character played by Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland. According to Levy, who recently spoke with Nerdist, this angle lets him tell a story that ties directly into the game without repeating any of the game’s storylines. He elaborated on the reasoning for this bold decision:

“So, for me, it was a fact that the game is awesome; the spirit of the game, with its action set pieces, it’s imaginative setting, and above all, the kind of rogue swagger of Nathan,” Levy said. “Those are things that I think make for a great movie. And, for me, the kind of the big, like the aha moment, if you want to call it that, was I met with Tom Holland and he kind of put it really succinctly and saying, if we do the origin of Drake, that is something that we haven’t seen as the plot of games 1, 2, 3, 4; we’ve seen a snippet of an origin of Sully and Drake meeting in the past, but here’s maybe an opportunity to do a treasure-hunting action movie with attitude, with a protagonist — and chapter of the protagonist’s life — that you can’t get for free, at home, by just playing the game.”

To be fair, it could be a wise move financially to recruit Tom Holland considering his popularity and it could ensure several movies in the future as he’s still very young. This strategy will also help introduce the character to an audience who hasn’t played the games. However, there’s always the possibility that it will alienate fans of the video games who are used to the older, more mature wise-cracking adventurer.

Uncharted is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year if you can believe that. The game that features the skilled treasure hunter, Drake, wrapped up its main story line with last year’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Though, something tells me someone will find a way to continue the story for years to come.
