New details on Benicio del Toro’s character in The Last Jedi

New details on Benicio del Toro’s mysterious character ‘DJ’ have emerged from EW’s coverage of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

According to the Academy Award winner, del Toro says he doesn’t know if his character is a villain. He told Entertainment Weekly, “I don’t know if he’s a villain. People are saying that, but it’s like they read a different script than I read.”

Here is what we do know so far: DJ is just a guy working in the underground world of the galaxy. DJ will be part of the mission that Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) take during the film at the gambling city of Canto Bight. They could be trying to find him or bring him there. Nothing has been confirmed, but he ends up there.

The official word from Star Wars, “DJ is an enigmatic figure whose tattered, threadbare clothes and lackadaisical attitude conceal a sharp mind and expert skills.”

Boyega told EW, “We just need a codebreaker and he’s the best in the galaxy. Unfortunately, he’s very dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn’t fight for any side.”

So, basically, del Toro’s character is an opportunist hacker who could get into the Empire’s system. DJ doesn’t choose sides. He just wants to survive.

“He has distinct opinions. The Resistance bombs the First Order one day, the First Order bombs the Resistance on another. It’s an ongoing war that will never end. For him, he’s trying to benefit off of that — which doesn’t make him the person you want to trust,” says Bodega.

Tran adds to del Toro’s character, “When I was onset with that character, I felt like there was a tiger in the room, and I always had to be watching. Like an animal, at any moment he could do something, and I didn’t know what.”
